Last night, Post Malone offered the packed-out Petco Park crowd a masterful showcase of his hit-making prowess, with the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter reeling off chart-toppers left, right and centre during his Wild Horses Festival 2024 headline set.

The audience were fired up for some good old-fashioned country music in San Diego, California following neo-traditional prodigy Zach Top’s charming opening performance, which featured a stadium-wide sing-a-long to his viral anthem, ‘I Never Lie’. Top even made a crowd-pleasing appearance during Post’s set, with the duo offering up a warm, genial cover of Vince Gill’s ‘Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away’, and in doing so, reaffirmed our belief that a Post Malone and Zach Top collaboration would be a match made in Heaven.

Although he’s made his name as one of the most mercurial artists in music, able to effortlessly flit between genres, Post Malone ensured the audience got their fill of classic country as he delivered energising renditions of ‘Wrong Ones’ and ‘Pour Me a Drink’.

Both appear on the New York native’s momentous, star-studded debut country album, F-1Trillion, which sent shockwaves across Nashville when it landed at long last back in August.

In addition to F-1Trillion stand-outs such as the six-week Hot 100 No. 1, ‘I Had Some Help’, and the hilarious, rip-roaring ‘M-E-X-I-C-O’, Post Malone treated the Day One fans in attendance to plenty of older hits, such as ‘White Iverson’, ‘Better Now’ and ‘I Fall Apart’.

The latter in particular served as one of the highlights of Post's set, with the bearded crooner lacing raw emotion into each line, as he bellowed achingly out into the California night sky, “She told me that I'm not enough / And she left me with a broken heart”.

Post Malone has never shied away from being vulnerable. As has become tradition in recent years, he endearingly devoted a portion of his set to reminding audience-members they are loved, and they can do whatever they put their mind to.

Post has come a long way from the hell-raising antics of ‘rockstar’ and ‘Psycho’, and as a result, when he performs these fiery, trap-fuelled tracks, it feels more like he's paying homage to an old band-member that's no longer present. Surely, the uber-polite, kindness-over-all megastar before us couldn't be the same Post Malone that used to revel in penning the most outrageous lyrics he could think of?

It's perhaps easier to think of each ‘era’ of Post Malone's discography as one of his personas - the blasé trapstar of beerbongs & bentleys, the bedazzled loner of Twelve Carat Toothache, the indie-folk experimentalist of AUSTIN - with every one beloved by fans.

Now, he's firmly established in his jovial, steel-drenched City Cowboy period - and judging by how spellbinding his Wild Horses Festival 2024 performance was, we're hoping he sticks with the Stetsons, flannel and belt buckles for a little while longer yet.
