As any Noah Kahan fan knows all too well, the chart-topping Vermont singer-songwriter has the power to really tug at the heartstrings with his music in a way that few other artists can.
First teased back in 2020, ‘Best Friend’ has blossomed into a fan-favourite track over the years, but has sadly not yet found a place on one of Noah Kahan's projects.
During his recent Charleston, South Carolina show, in response to a fan that told the ‘Stick Season’ hitmaker their dog had passed away three days prior to his performance, Noah Kahan decided to pay homage with a rare, tear-jerking rendition of ’Best Friend’.
The intricate, vulnerable offering finds the ’She Calls Me Back’ trailblazer crooning warmly across a gentle acoustic instrumental about how his love for his dogs is unending, painting a visceral portrait of the unique bond we can build with our beloved animals.
Originally penned as an ode to the feeling of abandonment his dogs experience when he leaves to go out on the road and tour, Noah Kahan sings, “But I'll bе back / Don't you know I'll be right back? / Heart intact, head in lap / I'll still be your best friend, oh”.
However, in light of the attendee's revelation, the deeply evocative track took on a whole new meaning, with Noah's perceptive lyrics capturing the often overlooked grief of losing a dog.
Elsewhere during his intimate Charleston show, which was presented by American Express with the objective of raising funds for small businesses affected by Hurricane Helene and Milton, Noah Kahan treated the Riviera Theater crowd to performances of two other unreleased tracks, ‘All Them Horses’ and ‘If It Helps You’.
Both are expected to feature on Noah Kahan's Stick Season (Forever) follow-up album, alongside other previously shared tracks such as ‘The Great Divide’ and ’Pain Eater’. With Noah reminding everyone just what a beautiful song ‘Best Friend’ is, we're keeping our fingers tightly crossed he finds room for it on his next record's tracklist.
