Over the weekend, Noah Kahan took to his socials to tease a brand new track, ‘Wreckage Of You’, with fans’ ears immediately pricking up as they heard what appears to be a set of Bon Iver vocals layered into the mix. Now, Noah has seemingly confirmed that ‘Wreckage Of You’ will indeed feature a blockbuster feature from Bon Iver.
The newly shared snippet of ’Wreckage Of You’, which was accompanied by a video of a Stick Season-inspired stained-glass window with a range of trees lining the backdrop, finds Noah crooning wistfully as he uses the metaphor of a shipwreck to describe the plight of someone close to him. The protagonist yearns for them to find their way back to shore and recover from their struggles, portraying himself in the lighthouse, as he guides and watches over the rest of their journey.
Amidst all the excitement, the clip, which was originally shared to Noah Kahan's Instagram Stories, was reposted to one of Noah's fan-pages on TikTok, ‘@kahanarchive’, along with the caption, ‘BON IVER ON NEW NOAH KAHAN SONG??????????????”
As fans started speculating in the comments, Noah Kahan's official TikTok account responded to that video with three ‘Smiling Face with Hearts’ emojis. Although not an outright confirmation, this feels like a thinly veiled hint from the Vermont native that Bon Iver is indeed set to appear on the studio version of ’Wreckage Of You’.
As the fan-page highlights in a later compilation post, Noah Kahan has cited Bon Iver as one of his all-time favourite artists for a number of years now. Even recently, in light of Bon Iver's announcement of his new SABLE, EP, Noah joked on X (formerly Twitter), “Can’t wait to listen to this new bon iver and look out a window for a while”.
With Fall now in full swing, the cosy, Autumnal ambience that pervades much of Noah Kahan and Bon Iver's discography will once again be at the top of many listeners’ playlists. A duet between the evocative, visceral lyricism of Noah Kahan and shape-shifting, ethereal textures of Bon Iver would represent a titanic moment for Folk as a whole.
Unfortunately, there's no release date for ‘Wreckage Of You’ just yet, but it serves as another indication that the writing and recording process for Noah Kahan's keenly anticipated Stick Season follow-up album is well underway. ’Wreckage Of You’ is expected to join other unreleased fan-favourites such as ‘Pain is Cold Water’ and ‘The Great Divide’ on the project, which we're hoping will arrive in early 2025.
For the full lyrics so far to ‘Wreckage Of You’ by Noah Kahan (and potentially Bon Iver), see below:
“I look out
At the wreckage of you
For as long as there's light
For as long as you ask
Curse them all out
When they fuck up your story
Tell ‘em the way that you told me
I'll comb the lighthouse
And hope you're there in the morning
Burning your boat back to the ocean”
