Hozier may have only released his lauded Unheard EP around four months ago, but - excitingly - it seems the Irish singer-songwriter is already preparing to drop new music.
A never-heard-before unreleased track entitled ‘Nobody's Soldier’ has surfaced online, with the brief, 30-second snippet finding Hozier delivering his trademark ethereal croons across an uptempo electric guitar riff and an emphatic drum pattern. ‘Nobody's Soldier’ touches on similar territory to the infectious ‘De Selby (Part 2)’, one of the many stand-outs from Hozier's 2023 record, Unreal Unearth.
Although the lyrics have been composed with Hozier's signature intricacy and enigmatic quality, the ‘Too Sweet’ hitmaker appears to be expressing his refusal to be placed into a box, “Nobody, nobody's soldier / Nobody, nobody's soldier / I don't wanna choose between being a salesman or a soldier / Scared I'll be looking a little older”.
He doubles-down on this rebellious spirit throughout the remainder of the clip, with the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper musing, “Every step a little bolder / Choose between being a butcher or a pauper / Honey, I'm taking on orders / Wanna be nobody's soldier”.
It remains unclear when Hozier plans to release ‘Nobody's Soldier’, but there were various reports that the folk-pop maverick played the track during his soundcheck ahead of his show at Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor on Wednesday (July 24).
Thankfully, this suggests Hozier is indeed intending to drop ‘Nobody's Soldier’, rather than discarding it onto his sizeable pile of unreleased tracks, as does the fact that the clip sounds like a fully produced studio recording, rather than a rough demo.
We're coming up to the one-year anniversary of Unreal Unearth, which arrived on August 18, 2023, so perhaps Hozier has his sights set on a surprise release to celebrate this milestone.
We'll be keeping our fingers crossed Hozier reveals the fate of ‘Nobody's Soldier’ soon, with ticket-holders to his summer US shows no doubt hoping he treats them to a live debut in the coming weeks, rather than keeping it confined to his soundcheck.
