New details continue to emerge following Morgan Wallen's contentious Saturday Night Live appearance last weekend, with reports now suggesting that the ‘Love Somebody’ hitmaker turned down a part in the episode's Big Dumb Line sketch.
During the show, fans remarked on how peculiar it was that Joe Jonas featured in the sketch, which pokes fun at New Yorkers’ willingness to queue up at viral food spots in the city, rather than Morgan Wallen, who was serving as the weekend's musical guest.
Sources have alleged to Variety that Joe Jonas’ part in that sketch was originally written for Morgan Wallen, but that Wallen turned down the role, leaving the show needing a last minute replacement. Joe Jonas seemingly stepped in to fill the spot.
It's the latest in a string of rumours regarding the Sneedville megastar's appearance on SNL. After Morgan Wallen abruptly left the stage during the end credits, briefly hugging the host, Mikey Madison, fans speculated that there was tension with the rest of the cast. Wallen stoked these suggestions by sharing a photo of his private jet on Instagram shortly after the show aired, with the caption, ‘Get me back to God's country’. Today, Wallen dropped a merch range off the back of this.
If there was any hostility between the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper and the SNL team, it's not clear why, with some wondering if political divides were to blame, while others have implied that the cast were unwelcoming to Morgan Wallen due to past controversies.
It's also not evident why - if the reports are accurate - Wallen decided to reject the chance to appear in the Big Dumb Line sketch. Given that the skit was gently mocking New York, it would have aligned with his preference for the countryside and his tone during the promotional video, when he quipped that the “rats are biting” in response to Mikey Madison and Chloe Fineman gushing about the Big Apple.
It's possible that Morgan Wallen didn't feel comfortable acting in the sketch, but this seems unlikely, with Wallen having appeared in an SNL skit back in 2020. The scene made light of Wallen being temporarily dropped from the show due to breaking COVID-19 protocols, so you can't help but feel that if he was happy to appear in that sketch, then he would be happy to joke around in the Big Dumb Line skit.
It's certainly a bizarre situation. The intention behind Morgan Wallen's high-profile appearance on SNL was to treat fans to live debuts of ‘I'm the Problem’ and ‘Just in Case’, from Wallen's forthcoming album, I'm the Problem, as well as teasing part of the tracklist.
Now, though, all anyone seems to be talking about is Wallen's hurried walk-off and his ‘Get me back to God's country’ comment. Yesterday, the country trailblazer shared a new snippet of his unreleased track, ‘Come Back As A Redneck’, and the fact that the track is permeated by themes of feeling judged by city-folk has been interpreted by many listeners as a pointed nod to last weekend's SNL debacle.
