A week after he was captured on video using a racial slur, Morgan Wallen has issued a five minute video statement.

In the video posted to instagram, the singer says he has spoken to leaders in the black community and says he is attempting to get sober.

He also admitted that his words matter and asked fans not to defend him; “It’s on me to take ownership for this and I fully accept any penalties I’m facing”.

Following the controversy and fallout of last week, his record contract with Big Loud Records and Republic Records was suspended indefinitely, alongside several radio and streaming services rescinding their support of the artist.

Wallen said he was drunk in the video that was shared with TMZ last week, saying “You saw me on hour 72 of a 72 hour bender. That’s not something I’m proud of…since that video was taken, I’ve been sober for nine days”.

He has since accepted invitations to meet with black organisations; “I heard firsthand some personal stories from black people that honestly shook me".

He concluded with a passage from Corinthians “‘When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.’ That’s what I’m going to be doing for the next little bit”.
