MGK has continued his foray into country music by releasing a new cover of Zach Bryan's ‘Sun to Me’, performed live from the genre-blending maverick's living room.

It follows the surprise appearance from MGK - formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly - at Spotify House in Blake Shelton's Ole Red bar during CMA Fest earlier in the month, and some suspect the rap-rock singer-songwriter is readying a new country album.

MGK's new cover of ‘Sun To Me’ captures the sparse, stripped-back ambience of Zach Bryan's much-loved original, which features on 2022's American Heartbreak, while infusing the pop-punk sensibility and distinctive vocal style MGK has become known for across lauded records such as Mainstream Sellout and Tickets To My Downfall.

Accompanied by his guitarist, Nick Long, MGK croons yearningly across a gentle acoustic strum, with the ‘my ex's best friend’ hitmaker bringing a brooding, introspective feel to Zach's endearing love song, presenting it a fascinating new light.

Zach is yet to comment on the unexpected new cover, with MGK addressing the ‘Something in the Orange’ singer-songwriter in the caption for the new video on Instagram, sharing, “hope you don’t mind i added some of my vibe to your song”.

MGK's decision to cover ‘Sun To Me’, one of Zach Bryan's lesser known album cuts, rather than a more mainstream hit such as ‘I Remember Everything’, is seemingly intended to demonstrate the scope of MGK's appreciation for country music.

He covered The Chicks’ iconic anthem, ‘There's Your Trouble’, at CMA Fest, and it certainly looks as though MGK is preparing to follow in the footsteps of Post Malone and Beyoncé by experimenting with some more country-leaning sonics this summer, following his collaborative rap album with Trippie Redd, which arrived in March.

With MGK having already flitted seamlessly between rap, rock and punk throughout his discography, his new ‘Sun To Me’ cover is a reminder that a shift towards country would come naturally to the genre-fusing chart-topper. Watch this space.
