MGK closed out another spectacular day at Spotify House during CMA Fest 2024, with the genre-blending maverick bringing out his friend Jelly Roll for a surprise duet of ’Need A Favor’.
The packed-out crowd were already rapturous and excited simply at the prospect of getting to see MGK perform his first ever country set, but when Jelly Roll emerged, the audience went wild, singing along to every word from Jelly's monster hit.
MGK brought a charisma and gravitas to the intimate stage, with the chart-topping singer-songwriter offering up a unique, punk-inspired twist on country that we can't wait to hear more of.
What was most apparent throughout MGK's set was how, similarly to his fellow genre-fuser, Post Malone, the previous evening, he looked overjoyed at getting to try out his country side and being so welcomed within the Music City community in the process.
This warmth was particularly evident during MGK's cover of The Chicks’ iconic track ’There's Your Trouble’, which he performed with a sense of swagger and playfulness.
At the moment, it's unclear whether MGK is planning on following in the footsteps of Jelly Roll and Post Malone by releasing a full-length country project. But if his 2024 CMA Fest Spotify House performance at Ole Red is anything to go by, we think it's safe to say a country album from MGK would sound incredible.
Jelly Roll and Ashley McBryde have been unveiled as the hosts for the CMA Fest TV Special, which will air on Tuesday, June 25 at 8/7c on ABC, and will stream on Hulu the next day. For more information on how to watch the CMA Fest TV Special, head here.
