It's been just over six months since Luke Combs dropped his paternally-minded surprise album, Fathers & Sons, but - excitingly - it looks like the North Carolina singer-songwriter has already turned his attention towards his next studio album.
Luke Combs has taken to socials to share a snippet of a brand new song, ‘More Less Than Perfect’. The introspective offering finds Combs stepping back into the shoes of the modest protagonist on ‘5 Leaf Clover’ and ‘Forever After All’, as he shakes his head in disbelief at how he ended up with such an incredible partner, despite his flaws.
It looks like the unreleased ‘More Less Than Perfect’ is intended to be a collaboration when it eventually drops, with Luke Combs teasing in the caption, “Who should I duet this with?”
‘Your Place’ hitmaker, Ashley Cooke, responded in Luke Combs’ TikTok comments with a tongue-in-cheek Hunger Games reference, “I volunteer as tribute”, and although it doesn't look like she's feature on this ballad, we'd love to one day see a Combs and Cooke collaboration. Given the emotional weight of this track and the fact that they've been friends since long before they became stars, Lainey Wilson would be our tip for Luke Combs’ ‘More Less Than Perfect’ duet partner.
Across a beautifully atmospheric, piano-driven instrumental, Luke Combs soulfully croons, “But just because I'm broken, it don't mean I'm worthless / The heart you let me hold, I know I don't deserve it / You could run away and save yourself some hurting / But you keep loving me, when I couldn't be more less than perfect”.
There's no word as to a release date just yet, but fans of the ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ chart-topper know that when Luke Combs starts sharing unreleased demos on socials like this, it usually means there's an album looming on the horizon.
Luke Combs earned a slew of plaudits and critical acclaim for his bold decision to release Fathers & Sons, which consisted entirely of stripped-back songs exploring the titular relationship. At the same time, 2024 felt like a quiet year for Combs in terms of out-and-out hits, so listeners are keenly looking forward to seeing what the country trailblazer has in store for us next. Three years ago, Luke Combs was the biggest artist in country music, and now, that title is undoubtedly held by Morgan Wallen. Could 2025 be the year Combs returns to reclaim his crown?

“Years ago, when you thought about the kind of guy you'd end up with
I'm pretty sure it wasn't me at the top of your list
Sometimes it feels like I just fooled you into falling for me
God knows where I'd be if I didn't, that's a different story
-
But just because I'm broken, it don't mean I'm worthless
The heart you let me hold, I know I don't deserve it
You could run away and save yourself some hurting
But you keep loving me, when I couldn't be more less than perfect”
