Luke Combs has earned a brand new Platinum plaque for his much-loved Tracy Chapman cover, ‘Fast Car’, in recognition of the track selling the equivalent of one million units.
The single recently became Combs’ 16th country music No. 1, and continues to vie for the top spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. ‘Fast Car’ currently sits at No. 2, behind his fellow megastar, Morgan Wallen, who returned to No. 1 this week with ‘Last Night’.
Incredibly, Luke Combs has received this Platinum plaque for ‘Fast Car’ on the same day that the song picked up its Gold certification, underlining the track's explosion in popularity.
Tracy Chapman, who released the original rendition of ‘Fast Car’ back in 1988, recently commended Luke Combs’ version of her classic hit, remarking in a Billboard interview, “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car’”.
Combs spoke in the lead-up to the release of ‘Fast Car’ about how the track has always been a defining song for him, with his father frequently playing it throughout his childhood.
The North Carolina native's ‘Fast Car’ cover appears on his celebrated 2023 album, Gettin’ Old, which was released as the sequel to his 2022 project, Growin’ Up. With ‘Fast Car’ earning Luke Combs his latest Platinum certification, it feels like it won't be long before the wistful track becomes his first ever Hot 100 No. 1.
