Michael Marcagi has at long last treated us to his brand new single, ‘Midwest Kid’, after the folk prodigy teased the nostalgic, uptempo earworm across his socials earlier in January.
‘Midwest Kid’ carries the familiar angst and yearning that pervades other Marcagi stand-outs such as ‘Good Enough’ and ‘Tear It All Apart’, with the Ohio singer-songwriter showcasing his haunting, atmospheric vocals across an energising instrumental.
The driving drum-pattern of ‘Midwest Kid’ combines with Michael Marcagi's captivating, reverb-laden delivery to accentuate the feeling of disquiet that Marcagi deftly laces into the lyrics. The production is more built-out than earlier stand-outs such as ‘The Other Side’, with ‘Midwest Kid’ taking on an alt-rock ambience at times.
The arrival of ‘Midwest Kid’ seemingly confirms the rollout for Michael Marcagi's highly anticipated debut album is picking up pace, with the ‘American Romance’ crooner dropping another stellar single, ‘Keep Me Honest’, just over a month ago. It must be said that the semi-autobiographical ‘Midwest Kid‘ would serve as a great album-name, but we'll have to wait and see whether Marcagi is planning to utilise this newly unveiled offering as the title-track for his new project.
Michael Marcagi continues to cement himself as one of the most exciting new voices in the folk landscape, after storming onto the scene with his break-out hit, ‘Scared to Start’, last year. The viral, hopeful anthem exploded into one of the biggest songs of 2024, with ’Scared to Start’ now sitting on over half a billion Spotify streams.
Michael Marcagi is currently gearing up for his standalone London, UK show at the O2 Forum Kentish Town on Thursday, January 16th, with the up-and-coming artist set to return across The Pond later this spring as support for The Lumineers’ 2025 EU/UK tour. Marcagi also has a slew of dates on the books as part of his headlining Spring run, with shows lined up in Massachusetts, New York, Virginia and more.
