There's always something special about one star covering another, as if game really does recognize game.
Recently, Lauren Watkins shared her take on Zach Top's swoon-worthy ballad, 'There's the Sun'. Releasing the cover across her platforms, Watkins can be seen leaning into the endearing song, pulling every ounce of emotion from her six-string and letting the tune's earnest words pour from her raspy twang. It's an all-around gorgeously intimate performance.
"Can't stop singing this one," she wrote in the caption.
The performance isn't Watkins' first venture into covering songs, the Top tune joining the star's previous reinterpretations of hits like George Jones' 'He Stopped Loving Her Today', Ernest's ‘Miss That Girl’ and Morgan Wallen's 'Wasted On You'.
Covers, however, are far from her forte. This past June, Watkins unveiled her full-length debut album, The Heartbroken Record, a 17-track collection that finds the star examining heartache under a microscope.
Ahead of its release, the artist delved into the album's inspiration, offering, “It makes sense that my debut album would be called The Heartbroken Record; heartbreak songs have always been my favorite. As a songwriter I feel a responsibility to put my experiences on paper. Whether it’s the loss of love, or a town, or a friendship, we all experience heartbreak. I think it’s really special that we can be brought together by things like that."
She undoubtedly used some of that experience to turn Zach Top's 2022 opus into an emotion-packed epic chronicling love, desire and what it means to yearn.
