Jimmy Buffett's posthumous new album, Equal Strain On All Parts, has been lined up for a November 3 release date, with three tracks being made available immediately.
‘Bubbles Up’, ‘My Gummie Just Kicked In’ and ‘Like A Dog’ are the first taste listeners have been offered of the new project, which was completed shortly before Buffett's death on September 1 2023.
‘Bubbles Up’ is a sweet, endearing ode to the way a drowning sailor can find their way back to the surface by following the escaping air. In trademark Jimmy Buffett fashion, the Gulf and Western trailblazer uses this as a metaphor for how we can be guided back to where we're meant to be whenever we're feeling a little lost in life.
This is the track Paul McCartney cited in his tribute to Jimmy Buffett earlier in the month as the best vocal he'd ever heard from the Mississippi native, with the former Beatle underlining, “We had a real fun session and he played me some of his new songs. One, in particular, I loved was the song, ‘Bubbles Up’. And I told him that not only was the song great but the vocal was probably the best I’ve heard him sing ever. He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater into a metaphor for life when you’re confused and don’t know where you are just follow the bubbles - they’ll take you up to the surface and straighten you out right away”.
In addition, McCartney plays on ‘My Gummie Just Kicked In’, with the new album also set to feature guest appearances from Emmylou Harris, Lennie Gallant, Angelique Kidjo and more.
In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Jimmy Buffett revealed the upcoming album's title was inspired by the phrase his grandfather would use to describe “a good nap”.
Shortly after his death, Buffett's iconic good-time anthem, ‘Margaritaville’, hit No. 1 on the US iTunes Chart, and many will undoubtedly be rooting for Equal Strain On All Parts to make its way to the peak of the Billboard 200 this November.
