Jelly Roll continues to consolidate his status as one of country music's most generous and kind-hearted artists, with the ‘Need a Favor’ singer-songwriter hosting a benefit concert at California's Rose Bowl in aid of the Los Angeles wildfire recovery effort.
The free show, which featured a star-studded array of guests, was exclusively attended by first responders and their families, with a total of almost 16,000 in the audience. More than 1,000 of those were incarcerated firefighters that had been helping to protect LA.
Last week, Jelly Roll took the stage at the FireAid Benefit Concert at L.A.’s Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum, which also featured performances from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and more.
During his Jelly Roll & Friends event at the Rose Bowl, the Tennessee maverick toasted the first-responders that have been putting their life on the line to try and tackle the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that have been ravaging the city for the past few weeks.
In an emotional speech, Jelly Roll reflected, “I want you to know that you are here tonight because you are a hero, or you are a loved one of a hero...I knew the moment I was watching this go down all the way in Tennessee in my house, I thought if I got a chance to go to California I was gonna play music to everyone who worked their ass off for the last two months trying to keep the rest of this place safe”.
During the expansive, hit-filled set, Jelly Roll treated the crowd to a range of fan-favourites from his sprawling discography, including ‘Liar’, ‘Need a Favor’, ‘Son of a Sinner’ and more.
The ‘I Am Not Okay’ crooner recruited a plethora of his musical friends to help him give the first-responders in the crowd a show to remember, with Jelly Roll showcasing his ability to nimbly flit between genres, bringing Nate Smith to perform his chart-topping hit, ‘Whiskey on You’, as well as linking up with rap pioneers Public Enemy, rock icons Shinedown and EDM maestro Marshmello during the spellbinding set.
For the grand finale, Jelly Roll brought out his good friend and BBR label-mate, Lainey Wilson, for a rousing and deeply emotional rendition of their 2023 ballad, ‘Save Me’. In a heartfelt TikTok post following the duet, Lainey Wilson praised Jelly Roll's decision to host the show, “Jelly Roll doin what Jelly does. It was an honor to thank some heroes along side him at the Rose Bowl Stadium last night. Thank you to all the first responders out there who have showed up time and time again. Tune in tonight to catch my performance on the 67th GRAMMY Awards at 7pm CT while we continue to raise awareness and funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honor the bravery and dedication of the first responders ❤️”.
This enchanting collaboration closed out a powerful, moving concert that was about so much more than the music, with Jelly Roll and his pals giving back to the first-responders that have given - and continue to give - a far greater gift to the Los Angeles community.
