Jelly Roll returned to the CMT Awards stage triumphant after taking home awards for Male Video of the Year, Breakthrough Male Video and Digital-First Performance at the 2023 awards. The singer’s ‘Son of a Sinner’ swept each of the categories it was nominated in last year.
This year, the artist won for Male Video of the Year, Performance of the Year and Video of the Year for 'Need A Favor' – once again taking home an award for every nomination.
The rapper-turned-country-music-phenomenon had the honor of closing out the 2024 CMT Awards with his barnburner, ‘Halfway to Hell’, a key part of his live sets, off his album Whitsitt Chapel.
Having won for his 2023 CMT Music Awards performance of 'Need A Favor', the big shoes Jelly Roll had to step into this year were his own.
While this year's performance was more tame from a production standpoint than his "welcome party" performance of 2023, nothing was lost on viewers.
Halfway through the song, Jelly Roll threw the microphone into the crowd before waltzing over to the b-stage to finish out the tune, surrounded by fans and pyrotechnics.
‘Halfway to Hell’ chronicles Jelly Roll’s early life, addressing his time in Davidson County jail and his path to redemption.
Ahead of the 2024 CMT Awards, Jelly Roll told the press that his success still surprises him. "Even coming back to my second CMT, I expected to pull up and have a bit of like, ‘I’m back.’ When I pulled up, I was like, ‘I am here again?’ I was like, ‘Who was in charge of this thing? How do I keep slipping through the cracks around here?’”
That humility and relatability is part of what has launched Jelly Roll into the country music stratosphere and part of what keeps fans wanting more.
Elsewhere during the star-studded evening, the 2024 CMT Awards saw captivating performances from Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Parker McCollum & Brittney Spencer, Trisha Yearwood and more.
