During her appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, Megan Moroney has delved into how she met Morgan Wallen, as well as touching on whether the duo ever dated.

With this being Megan's most in-depth and personal conversation to date, viewers were keenly awaiting the moment Alex decided to bring up her rumoured relationship with Morgan. Ever since Megan Moroney first teased her break-out hit, ‘Tennessee Orange’, in 2022, fans have been speculating as to whether the two dated.

In the lead-up to announcing the single, Megan shared a photo of her wearing a Tennessee Volunteers shirt, prompting Morgan to comment, “Did we ever figure who's shirt that is?”, before Megan jokingly replied, “It's mine now”. The song itself follows the star-crossed story of Megan Moroney falling for a Volunteers fan, despite coming from a loyal Georgia Bulldogs supporting household.

Megan has confirmed the shirt was indeed Morgan's, but has never gone so far as to discuss whether they were in a relationship, or even whether ‘Tennessee Orange’ is about him.

Around the halfway point, after chatting about an array of Megan Moroney's ex-boyfriends through high school and college, Alex Cooper took a long, dramatic pause, and then asked the big question, “Okay, so Megan. Did you date Morgan Wallen?”

The ‘28th of June’ hitmaker responded immediately, “Never exclusively”, before underlining that she usually steers clear of this topic, “I have tried to avoid that in every single interview I've ever done...but we're here now, and time has passed, and all is well”.

Megan Moroney went on to confirm they were more than friends, but that it wasn't an exclusive relationship. She explained, “Okay, so it was never a relationship. Here's what I'll tell you though, because I haven't told anyone this ever. So him and I met in 2020, Jon Langston actually introduced us. I was a senior in college, COVID hadn't happened yet, his Dangerous album wasn't even out yet”.

Megan didn't dive into any details, instead offering this classy summary of her timeline with Morgan, “So we're friends for a long time, we're not just friends, and now we're friends”.

Megan Moroney emphasised that she wasn't being coy or cryptic, rather, she prefers not to get into the specifics when it comes to Morgan, out of respect for him, “Honestly, because he's such a private person, it just feels awkward talking about it”.

When asked about the challenges of being with someone as famous as Morgan, Megan underlined, “It's not that hard, I feel like he's a very private person...like I said, we weren't exclusively dating ever, and...when we'd try to hang out, it was like, ‘Okay, we have this one day of the whole month where we're both maybe in town’, and then someone's got something going on...But him and I are friends”.

The 2024 ACM New Female Artist of the Year replied, “I have no idea”, when Alex Cooper posed the question of whether Morgan Wallen has written any songs about her, with Alex then quipping, “‘Lies, Lies, Lies’”, referencing Morgan's latest single, which some fans still believe to be about his time with Megan Moroney.

It must be said that it seems unlikely that ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’ is indeed about Megan, especially when considering the fact that Morgan didn't even write the track. It was instead penned by Jessie Jo Dillon, Josh Miller, Daniel Ross and Chris Tompkins.

Nonetheless, there remains an extensive, in-depth folklore surrounding Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen. For instance, fans have pointed out the similarities between Morgan's track, ‘Money On Me’, and the final lines of Megan broken-down ballad, ‘Mustang Or Me’, both of which were released in 2023 (“Who's it gonna be? I'd put all my money on me”). In addition, Megan appeared to stoke the flames of conjecture when she wore a No. 16 Volunteers jersey during a show in Knoxville last year, which some took as a nod to a key lyric in Morgan's 2018 lovestruck, football-themed anthem (“She had a 16 home-team jersey on”).

Megan Moroney was quick to dismiss this connection as a coincidence, taking to the comments to outline she was merely wearing Peyton Manning's number. There are suggestions that ‘Mama, I Lied’, taken from Megan's new album, Am I Okay?, was written as the sequel to ‘Tennessee Orange’, due to the similarities between the hooks.

Following the acclaimed release of Am I Okay? in mid-July, Megan Moroney has cemented her position as one of the leading figures in modern country music, with many championing the fast-emerging artist as a 2025 Entertainer of the Year contender.

Given Morgan Wallen is the most popular male artist in the genre, and Megan Moroney is rivalling Lainey Wilson as one of the biggest female artists, their roles at the pinnacle of country music will inevitably only intensify the intrigue around their intertwined past, with fans scouring each new release for veiled references and clues.
