Following the immense success of her debut studio album, Shot in the Dark, in 2023, it's safe to say expectations are sky-high ahead of Ashley Cooke's keenly awaited follow-up.
After earning her first ever No. 1 at Country Radio with the sinuous post-break-up anthem, ‘your place’, Ashley Cooke is returning with her first single in almost two years. We've had to be patient, but rest assured it was worth the wait, with Cooke revealing last week that her brand new song, ‘All I Forgot’, features a surprise guest - Joe Jonas.
Initially, this genre-blending link-up felt as though it came from left of field, but when you hear how Ashley Cooke's sleek, serpentine delivery combines with Joe Jonas’ unmistakable, assured vocals, it's evident that ‘All I Forgot’ is a match made in Heaven.
Speaking to Holler during CRS 2025, Ashley Cooke has explained how this pop-infused duet came about, “It was a really fun process. The song was sent to me by my manager, I listened to it and I was like, ‘Man, this is really cool’. One of my favourite writers, JKash, wrote on the song. He's huge in the pop space, and he's a great writer”.
JKash has a dizzying list of writing credits under his belt, having penned country hits such as Morgan Wallen's ‘Last Night’ and Thomas Rhett's ‘Look What God Gave Her’, along with pop smashes, including Maroon 5's ‘Sugar’ and Usher's ’I Don't Mind’.
Ashley Cooke went on, “They needed a bridge on the song, so I was like, ‘I think I could whip something up’. Within a matter of, like, 15 minutes after hearing the demo, I wrote a bridge and sent it back to them. We kind of had this virtual collaboration, which is so not typical for Nashville. It's not how I have always done things, but it was fun to get to do, and to mix the LA world and the Nashville world”.
The Florida native touches on how Joe Jonas was one of the first names to come to mind when she decided to turn it into a duet, “We were like, ‘This could be a really cool song to have a feature on - especially a pop feature’. We threw out some ideas and landed on Joe Jonas, and reached out to his team. He was super excited about it, hopped on the song and now we're friends and playing shows together!”
Interestingly, if you look at the writing team behind ‘All I Forgot’, you'll see another pop phenom, Charlie Puth, had a hand in the creation of Cooke's blockbuster new single.
“It's kind of crazy how that all came together”, Ashley Cooke fondly reflects, “He's just a savant in his own right. He's incredible. We got to throw around ideas, and he was part of the production of it, too. Again, it was a crazy way that all these people got involved in this song, and I'm just glad to be a part of it and have my name on it”.
The ‘never til now’ crooner expands, “It was kind of like, ‘Oh, Charlie's interested in the song. Let's check this out’. Joey Moi produced it, and we've never worked together before - even though he's big part of my label, Big Loud. It was cool. It was the first time working with a lot of people I've looked up to for a long time, and it's crazy how it all came together, but it did. I think the song is really special”.
Although Ashley Cooke is undoubtedly overjoyed to have collaborated with Jonas Brothers member and former DNCE frontman, Joe Jonas, it looks like he might have some fairly strong competition when it comes to naming Cooke's favourite JoBro.
When asked which of Joe, Nick and Kevin was her Jonas Brother of choice when she first started listening to them during the golden era of A Little Bit Longer, Ashley Cooke jokes, “I can't be honest. I'm gonna get in trouble...! Joe, don't hate me, but I was a Nick girl growing up. He was just so sensitive and sweet”, before paying tribute to one of the most lustrous gems in the Jonas Brothers’ expansive discography, ‘A Little Bit Longer’, which Nick penned about his experience of being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, “Oh, my God. That song was amazing”.
Ashley Cooke is quick to clarify, “I love them all. I got to hang out with them when Joe and I filmed content for this song. I mean, I was a Nick girl growing up, and he's just as incredible as everybody assumes he would be. But they all are, honestly. It took me by surprise how normal and cool they are. Like for child/teen stars to have that much success so young, you'd think it would mess with your head a little bit”.
Cooke concludes, “They are the most level-headed, wonderful people. You feel like they're just your friends, even though they have this crazy life story. So it's it's really unique to have that. They're just good dudes and they have great morals, and they're really humble. They're wonderful. This industry is crazy, and there's a lot of pressure, but it was pleasantly surprising to know that they were actually like that”.
‘All I Forgot’ arrives on streaming platforms on Friday, February 21st, with this momentous duet set to serve as the lead single from Ashley Cooke's highly anticipated new album.
