Gracie Abrams and Marcus Mumford have recorded a stunning live version of ‘What If It's Right?’ at New York's iconic Electric Lady Studios. The track, which explores the impending end of a relationship, appears on Abrams’ new album, Daughter From Hell.
Given how pared-down and understated the original version of ‘What If It's Right?’ is, it's hard to imagine it becoming more stripped-back and intimate - but Abrams and Mumford somehow accomplish this through this new Electric Lady Studios recording.
Abrams and Mumford's vocals complement one another seamlessly, with the decision to make this a duet accentuating the feel of the song being a moving, bittersweet dialogue.
Ever since it arrived as part of Abrams’ eagerly awaited new album, Daughter From Hell, ‘What If It's Right?’ has quickly blossomed into one of our favourite songs of the year so far.
It captures Abrams’ ability to create a intricate, atmospheric compositions alongside her go-to producer, Aaron Dessner, while still capturing the listener's attention throughout.
It's a quality you can also hear across Daughter From Hell, epitomised by the evocative title-track, along with other beautifully drawn-in offerings like ‘Sober’, ‘Humming’ and ‘Mews’.
In many ways, ‘What If It's Right?’ feels like an extension of Mumford & Sons’ February collaboration with Abrams, ‘Badlands’, which features on the British band's Prizefighter record.
Both feature stunningly sparse instrumentals, courtesy of Dessner, with Mumford paying tribute to Abrams’ influence on their album as a whole earlier in the summer, sharing, “We were actually at Electric Lady [Studios] down the road here. And she was upstairs and we were downstairs, and we started singing on each other's songs. And then she was really, really helpful throughout the process, actually, just playing her demos, and being, like, ‘What do you think of this?’”
As he outlines, much of Daughter From Hell and Prizefighter was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, making this return for Abrams and Mumford feel like a full-circle moment.
We're hoping we get to witness this formidable duo performing this stellar collaboration live together in the near future, with these trailblazing artists’ close friendship and creative partnership continuing to produce some truly fantastic music.
