During her highly anticipated London, UK show, Gigi Perez debuted a brand new unreleased song, ‘Crown’, which finds the fast-emerging artist reflecting on how society's perceptions of public figures seem to drastically change after their passing.
The ‘Sailor Song’ hitmaker treated the OMEARA crowd to a slew of fan-favourites such as ‘When She Smiles’ and ‘Sometimes (Backwood’, in addition to her latest release, ‘Fable’.
The buzz surrounding Gigi Perez's show was palpable throughout the month, with Perez securing her first ever No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart courtesy of ‘Sailor Song’. The sapphic ode to new love has exploded in popularity in recent weeks, with ‘Sailor Song’ spreading like wildfire across TikTok since its release back in July, before surging into the Top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
The OMEARA was packed to the rafters, with attendees spilling out of the main venue doors as they attempted to get a glimpse of the artist being hailed as indie-folk's next big star. ‘Sailor Song’ undoubtedly received the most raucous response from fans, with ticket-holders erupting into a fervent, sea-shanty-esque sing-a-long as soon as those signature opening chords reverberated out into the darkness.
Members of Gigi Perez's loyal UK fanbase were also excited to hear a brand new offering from the folk prodigy, ‘Crown’. The rallying anthem finds Perez admitting her frustrations at the flippant manner in which people adjust their views of people once they've passed, with the song's protagonist lamenting how this can feel insincere.
The titular lyric pivots around the suggestion that they only put a crown on Jesus’ head after he died. The unreleased track consolidates Gigi Perez's fascination with religion, and her willingness to delve into thorny issues related to Christianity that other artists steer clear of, as has been epitomised on both ‘Sailor Song’ and ‘Fable’.
As of yet, there's no release date for ‘Crown’, but given Gigi Perez's decision to include it in her London, UK setlist, it seems she might be preparing to drop it sooner rather than later. The new song is expected to feature on Perez's keenly awaited debut studio album, alongside other much-loved recently teased tracks, such as ’Sugar Water’.
It's safe to say Gigi Perez's OMEARA performance only intensified the sense of excitement surrounding the up-and-coming artist, with Perez showcasing her enchanting, powerhouse vocals and intricate, soul-baring lyricism over the course of the eleven songs. There was a striking ethereal quality that pervaded her delivery, with Gigi Perez often eschewing concrete lyrics in favour of haunting, wordless melodies and battle-cries, accentuating Perez's stage presence and charisma.
Movingly, the voice recording of Perez's late sister, Celene, which features towards the end of the studio version of ‘Fable’, was played over the OMEARA speaker at the start of her set, as well as being interwoven into her live rendition of ’Fable’.
This cemented the intimacy and familial warmth of the set, with a comforting sense of togetherness and shared understanding permeating the ‘Normalcy’ crooner's OMEARA listenership.
Following her stellar London performance, Gigi Perez heads to Germany for a show in Berlin this evening (Wednesday, November 20th), before Perez joins up with girl in red for her Fall tour.
