Morgan Wallen will make his return to Saturday Night Live as the musical guest for Anora star Mikey Madison's show on March 29th. Fans are speculating that this offers us a tantalising hint as to when we can expect Wallen's new album, I'm the Problem, to drop.
This marks the Sneedville megastar's first performance on SNL since 2020, ahead of his record-breaking January 2021 Dangerous album. Morgan Wallen was originally due to perform in October 2020, but was pulled after a video went viral of him breaking COVID-19 protocols, with Wallen being rebooked for the December 2020 show.
With the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter confirming his new album is “officially done” last week, fans are keenly awaiting an official release date from the country titan.
Back in January, we offered our prediction that Morgan Wallen would be releasing I'm the Problem on April 4th, due to this date being 4/4 and this project being Wallen's fourth. Adding weight to this idea was the fact that in 2023, the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper dropped his third studio album, One Thing At A Time, on 3/3.
Now, it's safe to say Morgan Wallen wouldn't have lined up a slot on SNL without this being tied into the album rollout, so we suspect March 29th will be close to the release date.
Some outlets, such as Country Minute, have suggested that perhaps I'm the Problem is being readied for a Friday, March 28th release date, with Morgan Wallen then performing some of the stand-out tracks from the project on SNL the following evening.
Although it would be a bolt from the blue to get the news that Morgan Wallen is releasing one of the most highly anticipated albums of the past two years as early as next week, it is certainly a possibility. It might make more sense for Wallen to be performing songs that fans have had a day to get familiar with during the late-night show.
Even so, we're sticking with our April 4th prediction for now. Despite the focusing being on comedy, SNL has built a reputation for being a space in which artists often debut brand new unreleased tracks, as Kanye did ahead of his The Life Of Pablo rollout. More recently, Chappell Roan performed her new country single, ‘The Giver’, months before it was made available to stream earlier in March.
Either way, we can't wait to see what Morgan Wallen has up his sleeve, with the genre-blending maverick teasing what looks to be a 37-song tracklist for I'm the Problem last month.
In addition to the already-released singles, it seems we can expect I'm the Problem to include recently teased tracks such as ‘Just in Case’, ‘I'm a Little Crazy’, ‘Since You Got Gone’ and the deeply personal, ‘Superman’, penned for Morgan Wallen's son, Indigo.
