Excitingly, Ernest seems to be getting dangerously close to ‘Album Mode’, as he begins to ramp up the frequency of new music teasers and unreleased song snippets being shared across his socials.
The latest is a sleek, beat-driven offering entitled ‘Hangin’ On’, which finds Ernest attempting to find clarity amidst the dust cloud left by his lover, as he wonders where it all went wrong.
The story starts with the sparks that flew early on in the encounter (“Whiskey shot, whiskey shot / Get me drunk, take me home / That's what you were tellin’ me”), before Ernest wakes up to find she's no longer by his side, leaving him to ease the pain in the only way a broken-hearted country boy knows how (“Now I'm hangin’ on to some Jack and some Jim / Yeah, I'm trying all the seals just to get you gone”).
The moody, genre-blending instrumental would sit happily on a Hip Hop track track, with Ernest flitting between his trademark country-leaning lyricism and R&B-inspired melodies throughout ‘Hangin’ On’.
It signifies a noticeable shift away from the sepia-tinged neo-traditionalism that pervaded Ernest's 2023 deluxe album, Flower Shops: Two Dozen Roses, as he delves deeper into the sound underpinning his recent Morgan Wallen collaboration, ‘Cowgirls’.
This latest teaser follows a couple of recently shared snippets from the ‘Wild Wild West’ songsmith, ‘Summertime Flies’ and ‘Takes After You’, the latter of which received an official release earlier in May.
It certainly seems Ernest's attention has turned to his Flower Shops follow-up, despite the fact that the deluxe album only dropped in February. Regardless, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that both ‘Hangin’ On’ and ‘Summertime Flies’ - which also drew inspiration from both R&B and Hip-Hop - will be released in the coming weeks.
