If you’re tuned into the country music TikTok algorithm, it’s likely that you’ll be well aware of the fun, if confusing, relationship between current country royalty Ella Langley and Riley Green. Since the release of their huge 2024 hit ‘you look like you love me’, the pair have been inseparable when it comes to romance rumours and fan fuelled theories.
Langley is currently on the road and racking up viral moments, with one in particular coming from a recent show in Wilmington, North Carolina. The clip saw a fan holding up a sign that says "Wink if Riley’s a dumbass," to which Langley read the sign, locked eyes with the fan and gave a dramatic wink, sparkle in her eye as she did it.
This, of course, sent Langley fans into a spiral as they created all kinds of theories around what had happened between the pair. Langley however, is always up for some fun and took to the Backstage Country podcast to discuss what happened with Elaina D. Smith.
“I’m excited to talk about this,” Langley said as Smith asked her about the viral moment. “The next day he texted me that video,” Langley said about her ‘you look like you love me’ co-star, “he said ‘not the sweetest thing I’ve seen’.”
Telling the story with a laugh, Langley followed it up to give an insight into the relationship the pair have.
“I was like, okay, hear me out… he knows me, so I’m kind of a jokester. I tend to live on the dark side of humour,” the singer explained. “Whenever I answered that, I was just answering it as myself and not as ‘Ella Langley.’ I was just kind of answering the joke.”
We know that Langley doesn’t take herself too seriously, so it’s no wonder that she sees the fun in this little moment.
“Like, obviously it’s a very dramatic wink, and right when it happened, I saw all the phones up there and I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s going to be taken out of context and I’m going to get ripped a new one,’” she told Smith.
The ‘weren’t for the wind’ singer was right, as the long-speculated off-stage connection between Langley and Green was placed under scrutiny again.
Langley responded to Green’s joke with a little bit of an apology (or an explanation): “I texted and I was like, ‘Hey look, I would see that as playful and endearing personally,’” even finding reasoning for her joke in some of the video’s comments. “I saw a lot of women on there saying that they’d say that about their husband, so I was like ‘See, it’s not that bad’,” all said with a smile on her face and innocent teasing tone in her voice.
Whilst the romance rumours between Langley and Green have been repeatedly shut down, they definitely have a fun friendship going on–one that can even see jokes taken to the stage.
With both artists currently at the top of their game, there’s bound to be another fun viral moment on the way.
