In case we weren’t sure before, Drake Milligan’s opening main stage slot at C2C on Sunday (3/10) proved just how destined for stardom he is.
There are very few people with such an engaging stage presence - Milligan jumped straight in with an iconic Carl Perkins cover of “Blue Suede Shoes” before rolling right into Texan legend George Strait’s “The Fireman”, a great tactic to get people up on their feet early.
Last year, Milligan’s C2C performances were his first ever in the UK, taking the Spotlight Stage before Lady A’s headlining performance. On stage tonight, he says, “We got to come to London for the first time last year and play a few shows, and because of all of y’all, we get to be up here on the main stage. We are having the time of our lives”.
Quite possibly the artist of the weekend, Milligan is an absolute expert at what he does, incorporating all of his inspirations into a one-of-a-kind, energetic and charismatic set. It is no surprise that he played Elvis in a CMT series, once you see him perform, who else ever could?
He is a total showman – he’s not just singing songs, he and his band are putting on a fully polished and exceptionally choreographed production. He and his band have an incredible chemistry and are so cohesive in their transitions and their choreography, they are as much a part of this enchanting set as Drake himself.
Milligan’s sets prove why live shows are so important for music – yes, his songs on their own are great to listen to, but it’s the performance that makes it the absolute best element of country music.
