During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Luke Bryan has discussed his former American Idol co-judge, Katy Perry, after the ‘Roar’ hitmaker went to space earlier in the week.
Katy Perry was one of six public figures selected to take part in the Blue Origin mission, which took the crew past the Karman line, recognised globally as the boundary of ‘space’.
Joining Perry on the high-profile all-female space mission was author Lauren Sanchez - who is also the fiancee of Blue Origin owner Jeff Bezos - along with journalist and TV presenter Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, rocket scientist and aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
While chatting to Jimmy Kimmel, Luke Bryan has touched on how he was gripped by the broadcast, “I accidentally started following it. I was doing my morning walk around the farm, which turns into checking Instagram and stuff, and I saw where she was like posting on her Instagram that it was happening at 8:30am CT, and totally got roped into the moment. I went and clicked on the links. Back when she announced that she was gonna do that, I had sent her a text going, ‘Good luck, wow, it's crazy you're getting to do that’. And like I said, a couple months later, there I am walking around my farm watching the one-hour telecast of it...”
He went on to admit he was a little nervous about his pal's adventure, “It roped me in, because you have a friend...and let's face it...it could blow up! So I wanted it to not do that”.
Luke Bryan and Katy Perry were fellow judges on American Idol for six series, between 2018 and 2024, before Perry decided to leave the show. Bryan is still a judge on the hugely popular talent show, which is currently in the middle of its 23rd season.
Kimmel then referenced Katy Perry's viral post-mission comments, during which she gushed, “I feel super connected to love...I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, like, how much love you have to give”.
Luke Bryan recalled, “I saw her kiss the ground - and that would be my reaction, too”, before making a tongue-in-cheek nod to hallucinatory drugs, with regards to Perry's interview, “Was there a pre-flight meal? Did Bezos serve mushrooms on it?”
The ‘What Makes You Country’ chart-topper went on, “I really want to go to space now!” before qualifying this, “I don't know...But yeah, it must have been quite the euphoric ride through the cosmos, Katy...Maybe she'll debrief me on those emotions”.
When Jimmy Kimmel raised the prospect of Luke Bryan himself heading into space, Bryan quipped, “I think I would get a resounding ‘no’...it would be a very delicate negotiation. I probably would do it...You gotta take that chance...Now that I've said that publicly, I'll have the negotiation...It roped me in, I was just hoping it got back safely”.
Amusingly, Kimmel asked if he'd have been more worried about the space mission if another American Idol co-judge, Lionel Richie, had been on-board, with Bryan joking, “Lionel's lived a full life...No, I can't get Lionel to ride around the farm with me...He wants to look at trees but he won't get out in case there are snakes or foreign creatures...I don't think you're getting Lionel on any space capsule”.
Luke Bryan is gearing up to release his brand new music video for his latest single, ‘Country Song Came On’, which appeared on his celebrated 2024 Mind Of A Country Boy album.
