Darius Rucker recently shared a video from a shoot day, showcasing his band Hootie and the Blowfish’s shout-out in Notorious B.I.G.’s earworm, ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’.

“Y’all know we get a shout out in this song, right?” he points out, one hand on his guitar, the other relaxed in his jean pocket.

As his team turns up the track, he joins in for the lines, “stay humble, stay low, blow like Hootie”. “That’s one of my claims to fame,” he laughs, “this record is one of my four favourite records of all time.”

The pair crossed paths at a Grammy Awards show where they shared a joke. The track came out later in ‘97, not long after Notorious B.I.G.’s death, at a time where Hootie and the Blowfish were still very much riding the waves of their success.

“I heard it driving down the road,” he shares, animated as he recalls the memory, “I had to pull over to the side. Freaked out”.

From there, Rucker went straight to a record store to buy the single on CD and double checked to make sure he heard it correctly, then “ran to the boys”. Having their band name-checked by one of music’s most prominent figures at the time was a huge moment for Hootie and the Blowfish - and it’s clearly one Rucker still recounts with pure joy.

Rucker pivoted into country music a decade later and has been releasing hit after hit since. He’s teased new music recently with his ballad, ‘I Believe’, but we’re yet to see a release date, so watch this space!
