Cody Johnson Secures UK Country Airplay Chart No. 1 With ‘The Painter’

Cody Johnson has notched the second ever UK Country Airplay No. 1, with his heartwarming ballad, ‘The Painter’, earning the top spot this week (Friday, March 8 - Thursday, March 14).

‘The Painter’, which appears on CoJo's widely acclaimed 2023 project, Leather, tells the evocative, touching love-story behind the Texas singer-songwriter's marriage to his wife, Brandi.

The intricate, stripped-back song's surge to the peak of the UK Country Airplay Chart comes barely a week after ‘The Painter’ leapt to No. 1 on the US Billboard Country Airplay Chart. Its success at Country Radio highlights how there's still an appetite for sweet, drawn-in offerings on the airwaves, as opposed to the uptempo, high-energy tracks that are often viewed as being more typically ‘Radio-friendly’.

In securing the No. 1 position on the UK Country Airplay Chart, ‘The Painter’ displaces Conner Smith's ‘Creek Will Rise’, which picked up the first UK Country Airplay No. 1 since the chart was created and launched at C2C Festival 2024 last weekend.

‘Creek Will Rise’ now sits at No. 2, followed by Kane Brown's ‘I Can Feel It’ at No. 3, which at this rate seems to be the prime candidate to become the next No. 1 on the chart.

Completing the Top 5 is Warren Zeiders’ fiery reflection on temptation, ‘Pretty Little Poison’, at No. 4 and Ashley Cooke's deeply personal heartbreak track, ‘your place’ at No. 5.

Interestingly, the biggest increase in impressions this week came from Morgan Wallen's infectious and joyfully twangy earworm, ‘Everything I Love’, which saw a staggering increase of 165%. Even though it currently sits at No. 35, it looks set to jump into the Top 20 next week. The next biggest gain was earned by Sam Hunt's ‘Outskirts’, which racked up a 42% boost in impressions and rose to No. 19.
