What song does a Texas native perform at an awards ceremony in the Lone Star state? For Cody Johnson, it could only be 'That's Texas.'
The hitmaker performed the rollicking anthem from his hit-riddled 2023 album, Leather, opening up the CMT Music Awards Sunday night (April 7). Austin, Texas' Moody Center was surely fired up by the star's boot-scootin' display.
At last year's ceremony, Johnson delivered a seated and subdued rendition of his tune 'Human,' a display that was up for CMT Performance of the Year this time around. However, the artist came ready to turn it up, prepared to "let ya have a real bit of the CoJo side", as he teased on the red carpet.
And turn it up, he did.
Crowned in his trademark cowboy hat and backed by a ferocious band, the star was pure power as he strummed and stomped out his Texas-sized tune. He made the entire stage his playground, running around and rivaling any other showcase of the night before it even started.
Johnson boasted three nods going into the event, receiving nominations for CMT Performance of the Year, Male Video of the Year, as well as overall Video of the Year for his hit 'The Painter.'
Of all of his Leather offerings, 'The Painter' has been the most recent track to secure the star a place at the top, the song rising to No. 1 on country airplay charts in the U.S. and the UK. But the hits won't stop there.
Johnson recently revealed that a deluxe version of Leather would arriving later in 2024.
Elsewhere during the star-studded evening, the 2024 CMT Awards enjoyed captivating performances from Kelsea Ballerini, who did double duty as the night's sole host, as well as Parker McCollum & Brittney Spencer, Trisha Yearwood, Bailey Zimmerman and more.
