Cody Johnson returned to the Bridgestone Arena stage for a scintillating performance of 'I'm Gonna Love You' at the 58th Annual CMA Awards ceremony. But he wasn't alone on the awards show stage.
His recent duet partner Carrie Underwood joined him for a surprise showcase, the two country heavyweights giving audiences an ear full of their new duet.
Teased by Johnson this past September, 'I'm Gonna Love You' arrived just in time for cuffing season, the earnest song making one want to fall in love. Their CMA performance had much the same effect. The pair's staggering showcase not only featured the two vocalists' enchanting harmonies, but it was bolstered by the hallmark power and passion they both bring to the spotlight.
Speaking to the CMA before his performance, Johnson commented on how far he's come to be accepted within country music, particularly from his days as an unsigned artist.
"Having five CMA nominations is incredible" Johnson exclaims. "For a guy like me, who was an independent artist for so long, and for people who, at the time in the town of Nashville, saying "you're really not what Nashville's looking for", "the cowboy hats not gonna work", "the whole Texas thing ain't really gonna do it", all the years of hard work that went into it, I'm finally invited to the party".
"It really means a lot. I know people say this, and it sounds like a cliche, but just to be nominated is a win".
