Blake Pendergrass Reveals Morgan Wallen’s ‘B-Room’ Songwriting Process Behind ‘Just In Case’

Rising country songwriter Blake Pendergrass has offered a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain of Morgan Wallen's creative process, revealing that the country superstar keeps a separate "B-Room" running during album sessions in the hope of capturing fresh songs as they happen.

In an interview with Kelly Sutton on WSM Radio ahead of his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, Pendergrass opened up about how he came to write 'Just In Case', the No. 1 hit from Wallen's album, I'm The Problem.

"So this was my very first No. 1, it came out in July [2025], this song we wrote in the studio with Morgan. Morgan usually has a B-Room going when he's recording his albums and stuff just to see if there's any inspiration to catch along the way."

A "B-Room" is essentially a separate space set up within a studio – whether mobile or built-in – that allows songwriters and artists to quietly craft and noodle on ideas away from the confines of the main recording room.

Pendergrass revealed to Kelly Sutton that Morgan regularly has this set-up running during his album recording sessions, allowing him and his collaborators to capture any creative energy that flows from the recording process.

"He's working all the time, and he's always trying to capture something that's amazing, and if we catch it in that studio session – we wrote this song one day and he recorded it the very next day."

It's enlightening to hear Pendergrass speak about the constant work that goes into Wallen's creative process, with both songwriter and artist seemingly alive to the idea that spur-of-the-moment inspiration can sometimes produce the strongest results.

We've known for a long time that Morgan is a prolific writer and recorder of music, with his recent albums frequently stretching to 30-plus songs, but Pendergrass' comments offer a fascinating glimpse into how that sheer volume of material is actually generated.

"There's no waiting period, you are actively in the midst of it, and I remember we wrote this song, and the next morning we listened back, and everybody there was like, 'Oh man, this feels like it's got something on it'.

"It was one of those where he said, 'Alright, fire it up, let's do this one', and he did it and it became the first single after the album dropped, it was one of the first and it became my first No. 1."

The fact that 'Just In Case' went from a sudden spark of inspiration during Wallen's album sessions to a No. 1 hit is proof that you never quite know what might emerge from the creative process.

Pendergrass and Wallen have clearly built a fruitful partnership, alongside frequent collaborators John Byron, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Ryan Vojtesak, Josh Thompson and Alex Bak. ERNEST also had a hand in shaping the track into the song we know today.

After delivering seven No. 1s as a songwriter, Pendergrass stepped into the spotlight himself on September 29, making his debut on the most famous stage in country music at the Grand Ole Opry.
