As the anticipation builds for Morgan Wallen's new album this Friday (May 16th), Anne Wilson has shared a stellar cover of Wallen's faith-filled 2022 single, ‘Don't Think Jesus’.
In many ways, ‘Don't Think Jesus’ is a pivotal track in the Sneedville megastar's discography, with the introspective offering finding Wallen reflecting on a tumultuous period in his life. As he contends with feelings of guilt and public scrutiny, he finds reassurance in the knowledge that Jesus loves him regardless of his mistakes - even though he admits he doesn't feel worthy of such forgiveness.
Anne Wilson's intimate, piano-driven version of ‘Don't Think Jesus’ captures the vulnerable spirit of Morgan Wallen's original, with the Contemporary Christian trailblazer's captivating vocals gliding across the weighty, contemplative keys.
While Morgan Wallen's version of ‘Don't Think Jesus’ carries more grit, with Wallen leaning into his raspy drawl and giving the track an almost conversational feel, Anne Wilson injects a distinctly soulful, uplifting ambience into the ballad.
The ‘My Jesus’ singer-songwriter also slows down the tempo slightly, allowing each line to reverberate out, adding emphasis to the deeply personal and candid narrative.
Anne Wilson is gearing up to join Morgan Wallen on his 2025 I'm the Problem Tour this summer, with the Kentucky native opening for the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper for both of his Seattle, Washington and Santa Clara, California stadium double-headers.
Wilson spoke to Holler shortly after the announcement to underline her excitement, gushing, “Morgan Wallen is by far my favorite artist of all time, so opening for him is an honor”.
In his recent interview with Theo Von, Morgan Wallen toasted Anne Wilson, “She's a Christian artist by trade, but she's dabbling in the country music world. She's really good”.
Anne Wilson has cited Morgan Wallen as a pivotal influence on her widely lauded 2024 album, REBEL, which nimbly blurred the lines between country and Christian music.
Last month, Anne Wilson released the deluxe version of REBEL as she celebrated the one-year anniversary of its arrival, including reimagined renditions of ‘The Cross’ with Chris Tomlin, ‘Country Gold’ with Jordan Davis and ‘Praying Woman’ with Lainey Wilson (despite their shared name, Anne is no relation of Lainey).
Alongside her shows with Morgan Wallen, Anne Wilson has a range of high-profile tour-stops on the books, including appearances at Jfest, Country Concert ‘25 and more.
