Allison Russell has announced the release of her debut solo album.
The record, Outside Child, was produced by Dan Knobler and is due out on May 21st via Fantasy Records.
The Montreal native is a poet, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and, in support of this debut record, has released the single ‘Nightflyer’, with an accompanying music video.
The record is heavily influenced by the light, landscape and language of where she grew up but also touches on the trauma she suffered there.
Speaking of the record, Allison Russell said “‘Outside Child’ is about resilience, survival, transcendence, the redemptive power of art, community, connection, and chosen family”.
With ‘Nightflyer’, she explores the healing power of motherhood “"I am the mother of the evening star / I am the love that conquers all" is the most defiantly triumphant, hopeful line I've ever written.
T-hat's about the birth of my daughter and how that transformed me” Russell added.
The record features a number of collaborations, including husband JT Nero, who she has worked with extensively as part of their band Birds of Chicago.
