The Background:

Zach Top has always been an old soul, as showcased by his penchant for neo-traditional, Alan Jackson-esque country earworms. With this in mind, it's perhaps no surprise that Top decided to eschew the typical standalone single release for ’Good Girls & Cowgirls’, with the ‘I Never Lie’ hitmaker harking back to classic vinyl single releases by dropping ‘Other Side Of Hurtin’ alongside it as the Side B.

The Sound:

‘Good Girls & Cowgirls’ is a retro, honky-tonkin’ anthem, with Top crooning playfully about the difference the titular figures across a lively, uptempo instrumental. You can hear unashamedly twangy guitars and jaunty keys combining with some subtle steel, while the Washington native's charismatic vocals take centre-stage.

The Meaning:

Over the course of ‘Good Girls & Cowgirls’, Top lays out what sets a ‘good girl’ apart from a ‘cowgirl’, with the ‘Cold Beer & Country Music’ singer-songwriter using the classic English nursery rhyme, ‘What Are Little Boys Made Of?’, which declares, “Sugar and spice / And everything nice / That's what little girls are made of”.

After agreeing that ‘good girls’ are made of ‘sugar and spice’, he then contrasts this with what ‘cowgirls’ consist of - ‘whiskey on ice’. It's a light-hearted nod to how you might find the cowgirls he's singing about shooting whiskey in your local country dive bar.

There's a satisfying nod to one of Top's early hits, ‘The Kinda Woman I Like’, which appeared on 2024's Cold Beer & Country Music, when he teasingly sings in the opening verse of ’Good Girls & Cowgirls’, “You sound like the kinda woman I like”.

Top makes it clear that, while he can undoubtedly appreciate why a ‘good girl’ would appeal to many because they go to church regularly and there's ‘not much drama’, he will always lean towards a ‘cowgirl’. At the end of the day, Top claims, despite possessing a wild side, you know you can rely on them (“They’ll do things to make you lose your mind / But when the chips are down they’ll be by your side”).

“Cotton Eyed Joe’s Friday night
What you drinkin’ baby I’ll buy
She said make it a double make it on ice
You sound like the kinda woman I like
She just smiled and said you sure about that
Are you sure you can handle what’s under this hat
Cause there’s two kinds of girls in the world
There’s good girls then there’s cowgirls
-
Good girls you can take home to mama’s
Take ‘em to church when they want you to
They’re everything nice and not much drama
If that’s your thing that’s good for you
Aw if you like ‘em more on the wild side
The kinda rodeo that goes all night
Good girls are made of sugar and spice
And cowgirls are made of whiskey and ice
-
Cowgirls like to take it outside
They love to dance and they know how to ride
They’ll do things to make you lose your mind
But when the chips are down they’ll be by your side
-
Aw good girls you can take home to mama’s
Take ‘em to church when they want you to
They’re everything nice and not much drama
If that’s your thing that’s good for you
Aw if you like ‘em more on the wild side
The kinda rodeo that goes all night
Good girls are made of sugar and spice
Cowgirls are made of whiskey and ice
-
We run wide open don’t do fences
We dance close, drink hard, don’t forget it
-
Good girls you can take home to mama’s
Take ‘em to church when they want to
They’re everything nice and not much drama
If that’s your thing that’s good for you
Aw if you like ‘em more on the wild side
The kinda rodeo that goes all night
Good girls are made of sugar and spice
Cowgirls are made of whiskey and ice
Good girls are made out of sugar and spice
Cowgirls are made of whiskey and ice”
