- Song A Few Of Your Own
- Lyrics“I was high when I met you, life was something to get through
Picture frame in your bedroom, of the one man that left you
And I felt the spiral of the earth, when you finally called me yours
Ain't it strange how you saw me, getting dressed in the hallway?
You could tell I was fallin’, or escapin’ from something
You didn’t say a single word, you didn't see me as a curse... - Artist(s)

The Background:
One of the four songs added to Noah Kahan's 2026 studio album, The Great Divide, as part of his surprise The Last Of The Bugs deluxe edition, ‘A Few Of Your Own’ finds the Vermont native crooning lovingly to his wife about how much he appreciates her.
It's one of the more joyful, uplifting tracks on Kahan's evocative, bittersweet fourth album, and sets the tone ahead of the fond reliance of ‘Orbiter’ and the sweet nostalgia of ‘Dan’.
The Sound:
‘A Few Of Your Own’ harks back to Kahan's Busyhead era with it's light, uptempo instrumental and the pop-leaning melodies. The the galvanising pre-chorus in particular feels like a warm throwback for the ‘Northern Attitude’ hitmaker's Day One fans.
The layered vocals that permeate the hook give the chorus an added sense of jubilance and energy, while the lively banjo ensure the mood remains bright and celebratory throughout.
The Meaning:
While many of the songs about love on The Great Divide find our a protagonist admitting his deep-seated insecurities and fears about his partner leaving, such as ‘Staying Still’, ‘A Few Of Your Own’ provides a much more hopeful, optimistic portrayal of love.
Kahan sings adoringly to his partner, recalling how he was “high” when their paths first crossed, before serving up a rose-tinted insight into how he feels when they're together.
The freedom of the “howling at the moon” lyric juxtaposes the line from the subsequent song on the album, ‘Orbiter’, when Kahan philosophically croons, “I guess some people don’t know why they’re wolves / They just howl for the sound of it”.
The hook concludes on a tragic note, with Kahan asking his wife if his past struggles and “debts” catch up him and he leaves this earth before her, to go out and live to the fullest (“Tell me, love, if the devil ever comes / To make good on the debts that I owe / Wish me well, tell the stories I would tell / Go ahead, make a few of your own”).
What has Noah Kahan said about ‘A Few Of Your Own’?
As part of his official The Great Divide album announcement, Kahan shed some illuminating light on what this body of work represents to him, “From a long silence forms a divide, a great expanse demanding attention. I stare across it. I see old friends, my father, my mother, my siblings, my younger self, the great state of Vermont. I want to scream these feelings, to gesticulate wildly at the figures on the other side, but my voice has grown hoarse and muted after years of climbing a ladder towards the wild, spiraling dreams that have materialized in front of me”.
The Vermont native offers insight into his creative process, “Instead, I wrote them down next to a piano in Nashville, next to a pond in Guilford Vermont, in a legendary studio in upstate New York, on a farm with a firetower in Only, Tennessee. The songs are the words I would say if I could. They are the fears I dance with in the moments before I drift off to sleep. The music here is my best attempt to delve deeper into the people, places, and feelings that have made me who I am. I am grateful for all of it, for all of you, for listening to them, if you choose to do so”.
Kahan has repeatedly touched on how challenging he found the writing process for The Great Divide, as the pressure to outdo his magnum opus, Stick Season, weighed on him, something he explored in-depth in his 2026 Netflix documentary, Out of Body. During an interview with Zach Sang, he reflected on how he managed to overcome his writers’ block, “It was a hugely cathartic experience. I had been so stressed and so lost and was literally thinking about quitting and going to work at my golf course as a divot repair person”, adding, “The Great Divide for me, I’m so proud of, because not only did it come out of a time of great pressure and expectation. I felt like I was fully able to say what I wanted to say in the songs”.

“I was high when I met you, life was something to get through
Picture frame in your bedroom, of the one man that left you
And I felt the spiral of the earth, when you finally called me yours
Ain't it strange how you saw me, getting dressed in the hallway?
You could tell I was fallin’, or escapin’ from something
You didn’t say a single word, you didn't see me as a curse
The state of the summer, blends us in with each other
We would pray for more thunder for a night under cover
We were huddling like mice, below an unforgiving sky
-
Too old for both of us to keep howling at the moon
To be cross-eyed drunk this young in the afternoon
Two souls in one truck with no money left to lose
Teach me how to not stare at you
I spend the whole night singing
-
Oh my my, what a time to be alive
Young and dumb on the edge of the world
Oh good lord, what it means to be alone
I knew well I knew hell and now I don’t
Tell me, love, if the devil ever comes to make good on the debts that I owe
Wish me well, tell the stories I would tell
Go ahead, make a few of your own
A few of your own
-
Once all the rain stopped, I was afraid you might wake up
And remember who I am, and remember what I’ve done
Didn’t ask me to justify, you just sat up and rubbed your eyes
I grew up with a feeling that what’s good must be fleeting
That if I’m happy I’m dreaming, then I’m prepared for you leaving
But I see that shitty beat-up car, oh baby there you are
-
Too old for both of us to keep howling at the moon
To be cross-eyed drunk this young in the afternoon
Two souls in one truck with no money left to lose
Teach me how to not stare at you
And we’d yell
-
Oh my my, what a time to be alive
Young and dumb on the edge of the world
Oh good lord, what it means to be alone
I knew well I knew hell and now I don’t
Tell me, love, if the devil ever comes to make good on the debts that I owe
Wish me well, tell the stories I would tell
Go ahead, make a few of your own
A few of your own
A few of your own
-
Oh my my, what a time to be alive
Young and dumb on the edge of the world
Oh good lord, what it means to be alone
I knew well I knew hell and now I don’t
-
Tell me, love, if the devil ever comes to make good on the debts that I owe
Wish me well, tell the stories I would tell
Go ahead, make a few of your own
A few of your own
A few of your own
Go make a few of your own
Oh, make a few of your own
Oh, make a few of your own”
