Watchhouse are gearing up for the release of their self-titled album with another music video. This time it's for the track 'Upside Down', which is premiering exclusively with Holler. Watch below.
In the visual, directed by Elizabeth Weinberg, a man and a woman drive through the desert separately, only to end up at a gas station together, in an empty town, where they begin dancing exuberantly.
The reflective, guitar-driven track begins somberly. "I knew right from the start / You'd come along and break my heart a thousand ways / And put it back together again", Emily Frantz sings in the opening verse. But that sentiment gives way to a glowing sense of wonder that builds in the song's electric instrumentation.
Talking about 'Upside Down', Frantz told Holler, "This song had a long and generous evolution. Andrew [Marlin] kept writing more parts and every time we’d think it was getting too twisty, we’d realize it was too late and the sections had become one".
"There are so many words here that resonate deeply", she continued, "especially the notion of having missed someone your whole life before you meet them. In our case, the inspiration came from a newborn, but it could be any person or relationship. I love how Elizabeth Weinberg’s video for the song expresses that feeling perfectly".
Weinberg explained her vision, saying, "I wanted to create a video about the wild, transformative experience of having a child that was more universal, something anyone could appreciate — the feeling of meeting someone whom you feel like you’ve known your whole life".
She added, "I took inspiration from stories I’ve read about time slips: people driving into strange old towns on road trips, and the places they see and people they interact with are gone the next time they try to find them. I like the idea of the transient nature of the experience and the magic of this quick but meaningful interaction".
Watchhouse released a summery music video for their track 'New Star' earlier this year. Recently, Marlin and Josh Oliver joined Rachel Baiman for her cover of 'Rust Belt Fields', which was written by Slaid Cleaves and Rod Picott.
Watchhouse, their self-titled new album, is out August 13. It marks the duo's first release since changing their name earlier this year.
