Holler Live Sessions: Matt Stell

Matt Stell is his familiarly comic self as he joins us at The Betsey for the latest Holler Live Session. As the chaos of central London erupts outside, Stell observes a particularly loud, speedy passer-by on their souped-up motorbike. "They're on their way to have sex", Stell notions jokingly, bringing the room back together in laughter as he carries on with his set.

Stell has never been one to hide his personality behind his music, always willing to show his true, light-hearted self to his growing audience of fans. He's also never been scared to show range, both musically and emotionally, in his sound - the three songs he performs for us here veer from beers n' buds anthems, vulnerable love songs and endearing familial tributes.

While Stell and his guitar-playing pal Matt Morgeson may sound more wistful and understated than they usually do on record, or perhaps even live, the set feels like an intimate exhibition of Stell's rawness as a songwriter; equal parts affectionate and joyful, humble and gratified.

Before heading out for a songwriters round in London with Elvie Shane, Stell delivers 'One of Us', 'Man Made' and the beautiful 'Sadie', showing us how good his music sounds in its simplest form.
