It's been three years since Kacey Musgraves released her Grammy Award-winning album Golden Hour, and we've been eagerly awaiting the follow-up.
Now, in a new interview with Elle, she's teased more details.
"Golden Hour was, in a lot of senses, escapism,” she said. “It was fantasy. It was rose-colored glasses.” Her forthcoming album “is realism.”
2018's Golden Hour famously detailed the warm glow of Musgraves' marriage with musician Ruston Kelly, but the two ultimately split in 2020.
While she's been tight-lipped about her new album, she has shared that it examines the aftermath of their relationship's end and the emotional fallout she experienced.
Musgraves told Elle the album will mimic a three-act structure similar to classic Greek dramas. In fact, she admitted that the form only came to her before she started recording.
"The word tragedy just popped into my mind. And I was like, 'Whoa, what if the album was formulated like a modern Shakespearean or Greek tragedy?'"
She also shared that she wrote 40 songs during the pandemic, but only 15 made it onto the album, which is slated for release later this year.
Earlier this year, Musgraves opened up about her divorce to Rolling Stone, saying, "It's two people who love each other so much, but for so many reasons, it just didn't work," she explained. "I mean, seasons change. Our season changed."
Although Musgraves hasn't released new original music lately, she recently featured on Troye Sivan's latest single 'Easy'.
