Evan Honer and Wyatt Flores. It's the pairing we never knew we needed, not until the two rising stars first teased 'Take Me As I Come' with a YouTube video uploaded in August 2023.
Now that their co-written opus has been officially released, it's already apparent how desperately we need more collaborations from the dynamic duo.
While it begins with a gentle smattering of bright strings, 'Take Me As I Come' grows into a striking acoustic offering. Clawing strums and plucky steel quickly texture the sparse arrangement with silvery cymbal strikes and quavering organ groans soon joining the mix.
The entire arrangement is the perfect foil for the two artists' brilliant vocal deliveries – Honer with his twangsty croon and Flores with his matter-of-fact warble.
Another day another regret
Try to remember how the night went
Oh this horrible feeling
In the pit of my stomach
Tells me it didn't go well
'Take Me As I Come' opens with a feeling of remorse for things that may or may not have happened the night prior.
As Honer leads with the first few verses, made up of lines that suggest brokenness and the need for change, some kind of inner-turmoil becomes obvious. "Can't fix what's in pieces / For my selfish reasons / Trying to run from myself," he sings.
I let a lot of people down
They're not surprised this time around
They say I'm a ticking time bomb
Way too fucking far gone
To probably get some help
Honer continues, his words alluding to the fact that the people around him are aware of his shortcomings, as well.
However, in the chorus, he bares it all.
Take me as I come
Or don't take me at all
I'm gonna let you down,
I'm gonna lead you lost
Darling I mean well,
I won't leave 'til I'm gone
I'm the maker of hell,
Burn every bridge I've known
He may be broken, but he's damn sure going to be honest about it.
At the end of the day, you can take him or leave him, just know what you're getting yourself into.
Another night another mistake
And I've wound up in the same place
In a cheap hotel room
With a parking lot view
Still not sure where I am
Flores' part comes out much the same as he rattles off his own repentance told through nights of mistakes, a sequence of cheap motel rooms and bouts of keeping people at arms' length. But he, too, let's it all hang on the chorus. Anticipating him to change is futile, so take him as he is or not at all.
Take me as I come
Or don't take me at all
I'm gonna let you down,
I'm gonna lead you lost
Darling I mean well,
I won't leave 'til I'm gone
I'm the maker of hell,
Burn every bridge I've known
Another day another regret
Try to remember how the night went
Oh this horrible feeling
In the pit of my stomach
Tells me it didn't go well
Lost a couple of my friends
And in the morning try to mend
Can't fix what's in pieces
For my selfish reasons
Trying to run from myself
I let a lot of people down
They're not surprised this time around
They say I'm a ticking time bomb
Way too fucking far gone
To probably get some help
Take me as I come
Or don't take me at all
I'm gonna let you down,
I'm gonna lead you lost
Darling I mean well,
I won't leave 'til I'm gone
I'm the maker of hell,
Burn every bridge I've known
Another night another mistake
And I've wound up in the same place
In a cheap hotel room
With a parking lot view
Still not sure where I am
I left my heart in the car
And I parked it real far
So she wouldn't notice
Or ever gain focus
Of who I am
Take me as I come
Or don't take me at all
I'm gonna let you down,
I'm gonna lead you lost
Darling I mean well,
I won't leave 'til I'm gone
I'm the maker of hell,
Burn every bridge I've known
Take me as I come
Or don't take me at all
I'm gonna let you down,
I'm gonna lead you lost
Darling I mean well,
I won't leave 'til I'm gone
I'm the maker of hell,
Burn every bridge I've known
