  • No. 26 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs

The Background:

In just a matter of a couple of years, Megan Moroney has become the absolute "it" girl of country music.

Starting with her breakout football-tinged love song, 'Tennessee Orange,' to her breezy clap-back, 'I'm Not Pretty,' the Georgia native has started what will no doubt become quite the formidable catalogue of hits.

Following her lauded debut record, Lucky, which arrived in spring of 2023, the award-winning artist took things a step further with her sophomore effort, Am I Okay?, slated for release in July of 2024.

The project's first two offerings – 'No Caller ID' and '28th of June' – took the shape of Moroney's signature sad girl country, with gripping storytelling and heartbreaking imagery in equal measure. However, the album's third single, 'Indifferent,' shows a much different side to the burgeoning entertainer.

First teased on socials in March, the first peek at the song came as Moroney sang along to the then-unreleased track in her car, signaling the start to fans' ravenous need for the seething breakup anthem in full.

'Indifferent' was officially released to the masses on May 3 and has since become one of Moroney's bonafide hits among fans, and is surely in contention to be her next entry at country radio.

The Sound:

Throughout her career thus far, Moroney has consistently gone to the same circle of writers for all of her most beloved songs, namely the team of Ben Williams, Micah Carpenter and fellow hitmaker Mackenzie Carpenter. The same can be said of 'Indifferent,' which finds the country darling penning alongside her trusty crew.

Allegedly written on the same day as the gut-wrenching '28th of June,' the two songs couldn't be more different from each other as 'Indifferent' is a rock-tinged tune fit with some of Moroney's most biting lines to date.

Produced as always by Kristian Bush – famously one half of country duo Sugarland – 'Indifferent' opens with a tight acoustic strum that takes listeners through the song's full chord progression as little bits of percussion fill in the gaps.

While everything remains restrained through the verses, all hell seemingly breaks loose as we arrive at the choruses and a full rock band crashes together. A powerful drum kit and a slick yet completely in-your-face electric guitar pound on the beat, serving to make the anthemic offering all the more jolting and energized.

All in all, it's a masterclass at injecting some much-needed and much-welcomed tempo into the often pandering sound of country music.

The Meaning:

"Throwback to how I used to care about where you went, where you’ve been, who you’re with
Losing my patience and checking locations and re-reading texts that you sent
I would cry, 1, 2, 3 too many times
Just wasting my prime
On a guy who was more wrong than right"

Moroney's husky, smoke-laden vocals ring through with confidence and conviction as she takes us back to reminisce on an old flame.

Where she used to be so dialed in and borderline obsessive about this ex, checking his location and re-reading texts like her life depends on it, she now looks back on all the time and tears wasted on a dude who just wasn't up to scratch.

"Now I don’t even know what I’m missing
Don’t care what it is or it isn’t
Don’t need your attention (no) or your time
They say did you hear
I say 'no thanks I’m fine'
I think I could wish you the best
The truth is I couldn’t care less
How sweet it is to be so (so) so indifferent"

As the band erupts around her, she explains that now she couldn't care less about what he's doing, who he's with or anything else. Where before she yearned for his attention, time and energy, she's now stepped happily into her independence as she says good riddance.

Not even caring to hear the gossip from their shared friend group, she chooses to remain ignorant to what he's doing and completely put him out of her mind.

Rather than wishing him the best, Moroney instead takes the stance of being altogether indifferent... which, honestly, sounds kind of nice.

"June came and went
When’s your birthday again
Did I miss it, my bad, that’s on me
I see your truck and I don’t give a ___ and it don’t make my heart skip a beat
I like not wondering where you are tonight
It feels so nice finally being on the other side"

With things lightening up again, she shares that she cares about this guy so little that his birthday came and went and she didn't even think twice about it. (#SorryNotSorry)

Now, when she sees him around town, she can't even be bothered to react or respond. Like Sabrina Carpenter, Moroney's give a f*cks are on vacation as she embraces the freedom and joy of being single and rid of this guy who sounds like pretty much the worst.

"I’m indifferent, I’m just living
When your mama calls I’m reminded you exist
And I wish that she didn’t
’Cause all of my give-a-damns have already been given"

As we arrive at the bridge and the song begins it's grand finale, Moroney is out there just living her life, only being reminded of what's-his-name when his mom calls her up to see how she's been.

While it's clear the ladies had quite a lovely connection while Moroney was in her past relationship, it goes without saying that she now wishes everyone else would move on like she has.

"Now I don’t even know what I’m missing
Don’t care what it is or it isn’t
Don’t need your attention (no) or your time
They say did you hear
I say “no thanks I’m fine”
I think I could wish you the best
The truth is I couldn’t care less
How sweet it is to be so (so) so indifferent
"

What has Megan Moroney said about 'Indifferent’?

Throughout her career thus far, Moroney has proven that she has a way with witty wordplay, and that's just as true on 'Indifferent.' Though this song has a scathing turn to it, it's also full of catharsis and contentment, something that Moroney thought was important to have on her sophomore record.

“To me, it felt really powerful to have a few songs that show the stages of grief where you’re shocked or sad or angry about a breakup, and then include a song like ‘Indifferent’ about how good it feels when you just don’t care at all anymore,” Moroney shared in a statement.

One of the reigning country queens of capitalizing on strong emotions in her storytelling, Moroney and the writing crew wrote 'Indifferent' amidst a flurry of feelings, noting on Instagram that: "We wrote this song the same day we wrote '28th of June'."

She added cheekily, "Emotions were all over the place."
