Russell Dickerson has more or less become the poster boy for infectious pop-leaning earworms.
From 2017's 'Every Little Thing,' 'Blue Tacoma' and 'MGNO,' to the 2020's 'Love You Like I Used To' and 'She Likes It,' among a treasure trove of others, the Tennessee native has steadily churned out crowd-pleasers that have soundtracked many a girls night out.
In February 2025, Dickerson added another to the collection with his feel-good anthem, 'Happen To Me.'
Laced in Dickerson's now signature blend of modern country and addictive pop, 'Happen To Me' follows a similar formula to his previous biggest hits.
Exuding a big arena-ready energy and easily screamable lyrics, the 2025 tune was penned by a crew of country songwriting royalty in Jessie Jo Dillon, Chase McGill, Chris LaCorte, Robert Hazard and Dickerson.
Similarly, the production was helmed by none other than revered producer Josh Kerr alongside LaCorte and Dickerson.
“I don't know who broke up with who
But she's in here chasin' tequila with High Noon
Don't know how long she's been movin' on
Maybe five weeks or five minutes, but it can't be too long
And we did that 'What's your name?' thing
'Where you from and what's your favorite drink?'
She said, 'Shut up, come and dance with me'
And now she's singin'"
The scene opens with our protagonist stumbling upon a pretty girl in a bar. It's evident that she's recently out of a relationship, but that doesn't deter our narrator from trying to get to know her.
Undergoing the usual pleasantries and small talk, the girl decides that she's not interested in the pandering and instead directly asks the guy for a dance.
“'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' at the top of her lungs
Don't even know she's 'bout to wreck someone
And, boys, I'm in trouble now, ain't even tryna get out
So come on, baby, take me down, down, down, yeah
Don't know what happened tonight
Don't know what happened last week
Don't know what happened to her
But she's 'bout to happen to me
She 'bout to happen to me"
The famous Cyndi Lauper song fills the air as the girl screams along to every word, and all the while, our narrator is falling more in love by the second.
He knows he's a lost case but he also doesn't know how the night could end. They may end up sharing a dance and a laugh and never seeing each other again, or this night could change everything.
“She'll probably be the one that got away
But right now, I'm takin' every second I can take
So we keep talkin', and we keep drinkin'
Oh, and I keep on fallin'
And she keeps on singin'"
Anticipating that the former option will happen and that she'll go on with her life like tonight never happened, our protagonist is determined to make every moment count.
They spend the night chatting and ordering drinks, all the while he's hopelessly falling for her and she doesn't even know it.
