Koe Wetzel - 'Casamigos'

Label: Columbia Records

Official Release Date: September 13, 2024

The Background:

Koe Wetzel's 'Casamigos' became a fan-favorite before it ever had a release date. He began teasing and road-testing the blistering tune long ago, and the question of when he would drop the song has been on everyone's lips ever since.

The song went through several iterations, and maybe an alternate ending or two, before it was ready to be set to tape. But now that the breakup ballad is officially here as an extension of Wetzel's July release, 9 Lives, our lips are finally free to sing along.

The Sound:

'Casamigos' comes alive in a few stark strums and Wetzel's gritty croon. It soon builds into a full-bodied country rock ballad, bolstered by a sharp rhythm, screaming keys and muscular guitars. As the song comes to a close, it's those same gentle strings from the beginning and the artist's battered baritone that are left to finish out the tune.

It's a conflicting composition, all at once forlorn and liberated, but also an effective soundscape against which a bitter breakup plays out.

The Meaning:

"Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you"

'Casamigos' finds Wetzel soaking up the clear light of the morning after, having gone through the ringer the night before. He lost his drivers license to marijuana, his friend to tequila and his significant other to some unknown reason. Of all those things, though, he decides the latter is the one thing he can, in fact, live without.

Throughout the song, the artist portrays an on-again, off-again relationship – he sings, "Feels like history repeats itself all the goddamn time" – one that feels toxic and more like a bad habit, rather than real love.

After leaving, his former lover winds up in Dallas to perhaps lie to, steal from and cheat someone else – "Stealing money serving bottles / With that bleach blondе hair". Because of that, the artist considers himself lucky, singing: "I'm kinda glad we didn't work out / And I ain't tryna be rude / But that tattoo on your ass / And thе past are two things you can't lose".

"Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you
Yeah, of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you"

What has Koe Wetzel said about 'Casamigos'?

'Casamigos' was originally slated to appear on Wetzel's 9 Lives. Ahead of the collection's official release, the song was listed as its third track. Somewhere along the way, though, the tune was replaced by a cover of XXXTentacion's 'Depression & Obsession', originally without a word of explanation.

However, Wetzel recently addressed the change, saying he had decided that 'Casamigos' wasn't ready for release then. The song went through several more rewrites before he finally got it perfect.

"The journey behind 'Casamigos', it took a while," he explained on social media. "It was its own song for a bit and then it changed – I think it changed like five or six different times ... We couldn't really get it right ... We'd get used to it for a month or so and then we'd change it up, but once the final was done, we knew that it was right for the song."

He continued, "I think it going through those up and downs and having those different moments is one of the reasons why we kept it off the record to begin with."

Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you

I can drink the handle
But I can't handle why
Why I let you in the front door
Just to waste a good goodbye
Feels like history repeats itself all the goddamn time
'Cause I would've seen it coming, if I hadn't been so high

Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you

I heard you moved to uptown Dallas
Why the hell would you move there?
Stealing money serving bottles
With that bleach blondе hair
I'm kinda glad we didn't work out
And I ain't tryna be rude
But that tattoo on your ass
And thе past are two things you can't lose

Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you

Mary Jane took my license
And Casamigos took my friend
And you took your shit on down the road
The way you always do
But of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you
Yeah, of all the things I lost last night,
I'm alright with losing you
