During a new conversation with Holler, Zach Top has reflected on the first time he got to meet one of his idols, Alan Jackson, as well as sharing that the ‘Good Time’ legend and his team weren't best pleased with the viral conspiracy that he is Top's dad.
Top opened for Jackson on a number of the latter's Last Call run in 2025, with the hugely popular series of shows being billed as the ‘Chattahoochee’ hitmaker's final tour.
Top commented in previous interviews that it felt like a passing of the torch, in a way, as he represents the flag-bearer for today's Jackson-inspired, neo-traditional country sound.
In the lead-up to the shows, there was a hilarious - and very much tongue-in-cheek - conspiracy making the rounds across social media that Jackson is actually Top's father.
It all started with references to how similar Top's style is to that of Jackson's, with one radio host then taking it a step further by pointing out that Jackson was supposedly playing a show in Top's home-state - Washington - around the time he would've been conceived in 1997. This quickly spiralled into a full-blown theory that the two are related, with Top often playing into the light-hearted speculation.
Before opening for Jackson last year, Top had joked in an interview that he was going to see if Jackson was aware of the conspiracy, and maybe put together a playful on-stage moment.
In a forthcoming interview with Holler, the ‘I Never Lie’ singer-songwriter reveals that Jackson and his team had indeed seen the online conspiracy - but that they weren't fans.
Top explains, “It's funny. I did get to meet him just for a minute, said ‘Hi’ and told him what a big fan I was, and got to meet his wife too. I did not bring any of that up. I had heard that they weren't the biggest fans of all the joking around and conspiracy thing”.
He shrugs as he admits he didn't see the harm, “I don't know, I see it as good fun. Nobody's actually being serious about it. I don't see exactly what it hurts. But anyway, I had heard they weren't as big a fans of it. So I didn't bring it up to him when I met him”.
Top concludes that, regardless of Jackson's apparent disapproval of the mock ‘fatherhood’ rumours, it was an incredibly special experience getting to cross paths with one of his musical heroes, “But I was really honoured to meet him, that was a cool one, you know. As far as folks left alive, he's one of the big ones for me, for sure”.
Even though they're not really related, Top's burgeoning catalogue of classic country hits is undoubtedly a touchstone for the contemporary neo-traditional movement, with the recent GRAMMY-winner keeping the spirit of greats such as Jackson, George Strait, Keith Whitley and Randy Travis alive through his steel-soaked earworms.
With a stellar album out, Ain't In It For My Health, a Best Traditional Country Album GRAMMY under his belt and a World Tour imminent, Top continues to cement himself as one of the most exciting new voices in the country music landscape. And we now know for sure that, despite the rumours, there was no nepotism involved...
