Despite the media storm surrounding Zach Bryan and Brianna LaPaglia's unexpected break-up, Zach appears to be continuing to keep his head down as he hones his new album.
Just over a week after sharing an unreleased song teaser seemingly called ‘Rockaway’, the ‘Revival’ hitmaker has returned to Instagram to upload a clip of another track, ‘All Good Things Past’.
The bittersweet offering features more accompaniment than his usual demos, with Zach Bryan being joined by five members of his band, including a saxophonist and trumpeter. Somewhat aptly for the bare-bones and anti-commercial aesthetic Zach so often opts for, the clip was recorded in what looks to be a stable.
The new clip carries a quietly hopeful tone, with Zach Bryan lacing his trademark wistfulness and nostalgia into the lyrics as he paints warm, sepia-tinged vignettes of country living (“And the coming of the Lord couldn't keep me from / A down South comeback smile / That Oklahoman, popsicle frozen / Empties on a burnpile”).
It feels as though the protagonist in ‘All Good Things Past’ is attempting to find a way back to himself, after making a mistake (“All good things past / And your boy got himself into some trouble again”). The reference to getting into ‘some trouble again’ will no doubt be picked up and dissected by fans, in light of his somewhat contentious split from Brianna, but it's not clear if the lyrics are indeed about this relationship.
The appearance of his band-members is particularly surprising, not only because Zach Bryan usually performs his unreleased clips alongside nothing more than a piano or a guitar, but also because he has hinted that his next project might be fully acoustic.
The Oklahoma singer-songwriter has revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he is excitingly hard at work on his next record, before warning fans, “if it's acoustic don't mind it”.
During a conversation with Bruce Springsteen for Rolling Stone earlier in October, Zach Bryan explained how he's already penned “14 songs” for his new project. It's not yet evident whether ‘All Good Things Past’ and ‘Rockaway’ were part of that original 14, or whether Zach has written these introspective tracks more recently. Either way, the sense of anticipation remains high ahead of the forthcoming project.
