Zach Bryan has once again teamed up with his friend and content creator, Harley Carmichael, with the duo delivering a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek cover of Jason Aldean's 2010 country hit, ’Dirt Road Anthem’ - with an amusing, hotdog-inspired twist.
When we saw Bryan standing with his guitar in hand and that classic, I'm-about-to-tease-my-tenth-song-in-a-week look on his face, we assumed he'd be playing a snippet of an unreleased track, one that won't see the light of day for at least four years.
But rather than serenading us with the weighty, poetic lyrics we've become accustomed to hearing from the ‘Dawns’ singer-songwriter, he starts singing about...well, hotdogs.
Without breaking his sombre expression, Bryan begins, “Chilli on a hotdog / I'm talkin’ bout chilli on a hotdog”, to the unmistakable tune of Aldean's popular, chart-topping single.
Bryan even offers up a rapped verse, in which he lists the various ways in which he likes to enjoy a hotdog, with Carmichael chiming in for certain portions of the light-hearted cover.
Bryan has been outspoken in the past about his distaste for Nashville's country scene, and Aldean is, in many ways, a poster-boy for the most commercial and widely maligned wave of music to emerge from Music City during the 2020's - Bro-Country.
It's possible, therefore, that the Oklahoma native's new mock cover is a dig at Aldean, particularly with the ‘Burnin‘ It Down’ crooner being good buddies with Kid Rock and President Trump. Bryan criticised the people that had been throwing a “tantrum” over Bad Bunny's Super Bowl LX Half-Time show and those who were hosting an alternative Half-Time concert. Rock headlining Turning Point USA's ‘All-American’ Half-Time show, while Trump lambasted Bad Bunny's performance. What's more, Brantley Gilbert, who performed at the TPUSA event alongside Rock, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett, is a co-writer on ‘Dirt Road Anthem’.
Bryan and Carmichael previously joined forces to share a video of the latter pretending to block out Bad Bunny's set, and instead watching the TPUSA Half-Time show on his phone. Bryan captioned the clip by ridiculing Kid Rock and his fellow TPUSA performers, “What kid rock actually thinks is happening across America”.
Even with this context, we reckon Bryan and Carmichael's new clip is simply a bit of fun. Bryan has joked, “Concept album in the works”, and although we don't think he's being serious, a series of playful, reimagined country covers isn't a terrible idea...
