As thousands gathered at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and millions more across the country tuned in to watch, the late former President Jimmy Carter was laid to rest yesterday (January 9).

Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. While only serving one term as president, the Georgia native spent his post-office years as a humanitarian and statesman, even earning the esteemed Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 for undertaking peace negotiations, campaigning for human rights and working for social welfare.

Among his most notable accomplishments throughout his life was his heavy involvement and contributions to the work of Habitat for Humanity, which is where he met one of his most unlikely friends in Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood.

With years spent side by side on building projects all around the globe, the country power couple and Carter, along with his wife Rosalynn.

In 2023, Brooks & Yearwood were asked to perform at Rosalynn's funeral service where they offered a moving rendition of John Lennon's 'Imagine.' A little over a year later, they offered the same tribute to the late President Carter.

Walking onto the cathedral's stage toward the end of the service, Brooks, who is rarely seen without his signature cowboy hat, was armed with an acoustic guitar as he began delivering the peaceful, tender anthem.

As videos of Carter's life and career played in tandem, Yearwood provided goosebump-inducing harmonies throughout the chorus. Together, they sang: "You may say I'm a dreamer / But I'm not the only one / I hope someday you'll join us / And the world will be as one."

Following the news of Carter's passing late last year, Brooks was quick to pay tribute across his socials to the enduring political figure, saying: "President Carter, the legacy you and Rosalynn have left us is as beautiful as the life you lived."

Showing a picture of the Carter's at a Habitat for Humanity build, he added: “Thank you for your lifetime of service to our country and the world. You inspired us not just by what you said, but by what you built. We love you.”
