In what's been a ground-breaking year for the Virginia singer-songwriter, Shaboozey has added another milestone by making his highly anticipated Saturday Night Live debut.
The ‘Highway’ crooner was the musical guest for this weekend's show, which was hosted by Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal. Shaboozey graced the revered SNL stage twice to perform his latest single, ‘Good News’, and his viral 2024 smash, ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’.
The latter recently equalled the 19-week stint spent atop the Billboard by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus with ‘Old Town Road’, with ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ still challenging to become the first track to ever secure 20 weeks at the pinnacle of the all-genre chart.
Shaboozey's SNL performance of ’A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ captured the freeing, feel-good ambience that pervades the anthem, with the fast-emerging artist dancing across the red-tinted block at the centre of the stage as he rattled through the infectious track.
His live rendition of ‘Good News’ was considerably more stripped-back, allowing Shaboozey to showcase his enchanting, charismatic vocals as he serenaded viewers with the hopeful ode. With both ‘Good News’ and ’A Bar Song (Tipsy)’, Shaboozey sought to highlight the country-leaning aspects of the tracks, with the yearning cry of the steel guitar being placed at the forefront of the mix.
With more traditional-leaning portions of the country music world criticising Shaboozey's genre-blending style, this creative decision could well be an attempt to underline that, despite his penchant for blur the lines between sounds, at the heart of the ‘Last Of My Kind’ prodigy's music is a deep-seated reverence for country.
Last week, Shaboozey shared the heartwarming video of him being told the ‘Good News’ that he'd be performing on SNL for the first time, with the up-and-coming crooner joking that he wants to write and star in a skit for the comedy show at some point.
