Just days after the emergence of the mysterious Hickman Holler Hunting Club teasing something on the way from Tyler Childers, the ‘In Your Love’ hitmaker has now shared a video trailer, seemingly hinting at new music coming on June 12th, 8am ET.
In the newly shared clip, which has been posted by both Childers’ main Instagram account and the Hickman Holler Hunting Club account, a man gets a fresh trim at his local hairdressers. When asked what inspired him to get a tidied-up look, he explains, “Well, the boys called a meeting at the hunting club, said to dress my best and clean myself up some, so came to get my ears lowered, you know?”
The protagonist appears to be Casey Campbell, who starred in the video for Tyler Childers’ ‘Angel Band’, one of the stand-outs from 2022's Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?
The fact that Campbell references cleaning himself up could be a callback to that music video, in which he dons a thick beard and long hair. This trailer could be implying that whatever is coming from Childers will be a continuation of that narrative.
As Casey Campbell leaves the hairdresser's chair, he hears the barber call out the name, “Oneida”, which pricks Campbell's ears. He and Oneida exchange a fretful glance as they walk past one another, before the camera pans to some hunting memorabilia.
‘Oneida’ is one of the many fan-favourite songs in Tyler Childers’ discography to have never been given an official release, much like the long-mythologised ‘Jersey Giant’.
The Kentucky native first started performing ‘Oneida’ back in 2016, with a video existing online of Childers delivering an acoustic rendition of the track during a Red Barn Radio session. The tale of ‘Oneida’ explores a relationship with an older woman.
Could Tyler Childers finally be about to release ‘Oneida’? Interestingly, he also performed ‘Jersey Giant’ with a full band for the first time ever in April, so could be preparing to drop a plethora of his unreleased gems as part of his forthcoming album? It sounds like another beloved track, ‘Nose on the Grindstone’, which was only ever released as an OurVinyl Session, and never given a proper studio release, might be playing in the background of the newly unveiled trailer.
We know he's been working with the prolific super-producer, Rick Rubin, on his next album, with Peter Edge, the Chairman and CEO of RCA Records, revealing in a recent Hits Daily Double interview, “I’m really excited about Tyler Childers' new album, which is produced by Rick Rubin. He defies expectations, and this new album goes even further. The great thing about Tyler is that he does it the way he wants to do it. He's playing giant venues, and he's making the music he wants to make”.
Soon after this conversation dropping, a ‘Hickman Holler Hunting Club’ Instagram account and website were launched out of the blue, directing fans to sign up to a Tyler Childers-affiliated mailing-list. Childers’ label imprint is called Hickman Holler Records.
Today's enigmatic trailer concludes by assuring fans that more news will be shared on June 12th at 8am ET. It remains to be seen whether this will be the date we get a new song from Tyler Childers, whether it will be an official announcement regarding his next era or whether he might just surprise drop the whole album.
We'd love it to be the latter, but judging by his Rustin’ in the Rain rollout in 2023, we suspect he'll be starting with a lead single - which could very well turn out to be ‘Oneida’. Either way, the anticipation is through the roof, and we can't wait to see what the alt-country maverick has in store for us tomorrow (Thursday, June 12th).
