Turnpike Troubadours consolidated their strong relationship with Taylor Sheridan's popular neo-Western series, Yellowstone, by making their first on-screen appearance in the show.
During the latest episode of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, titled ‘Give the World Away’, Evan Felker and his crew performed at a special auction held by Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and her partner, Rip (Cole Hauser), alongside Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes).
The trio pull in the somewhat brash and uber-confident Travis Wheatley, portrayed by none other than the show's creator and writer, Taylor Sheridan, to help put the auction together. When Beth goes to Travis’ house to ask for his assistance, she's surprised to find his girlfriend, Sadie - played by Bella Hadid - answering the door.
This all culminates in a grand auction held at the sprawling Dutton Ranch, and naturally, who would serve as the perfect source of entertainment during an event such as this?
The Turnpike Troubadours, of course, with the six-piece making an on-stage appearance during the festivities to perform three stand-outs from their expansive discography, ‘Good Lord Lorrie’, ‘Brought Me’ and ‘Pay No Rent’. To help celebrate the on-screen performance, the band have released a four-song Western AF EP on streaming platforms, featuring the three tracks they played on Yellowstone plus ‘Mean Old Sun’, taken from their widely lauded 2023 album, A Cat in the Rain.
The nature of the Turnpike Troubadours’ appearance on the latest instalment of Yellowstone felt reminiscent of Lainey Wilson's performance at the Dutton Ranch in Season 5 Part 1. Lainey plays up-and-coming musician, Abby, with the 2024 ACM Entertainer of the Year expected to make a return during next week's Yellowstone finale. Other notable artists to have transitioned from high-profile soundtrack features to on-screen performances include Zach Bryan and Shane Smith & The Saints.
Although this marked the Turnpike Troubadours’ debut on-screen role on Yellowstone, it's not the first time the group have had their music featured by Taylor Sheridan and the show's music supervisor, Andrea von Foerster, with fan-favourites such as ‘The Mercury’ and ‘Long Hot Summer’ being included in previous seasons.
Elsewhere during the penultimate episode of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, ‘Give the World Away’, which aired on Sunday, December 8th, viewers could hear Sam Barber's ‘Better Year’, Marcus King's ‘Hard Working Man’, Jackson Dean's ‘Still Ragin’, Brothers Osborne's ‘Sun Ain't Even Gone Down Yet’, Hayes Carll's ‘Down The Road Tonight’, 49 Winchester's ‘Make It Count’ and Ward Davis’ ‘Get to Work Whiskey’.
