During a conversation with Billboard, Shaboozey has told Tetris how much he respects Morgan Wallen, as well as implying the duo almost collaborated for his 2024 studio album.
The interview was taking place in the lead-up to the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, which saw Shaboozey taking home three coveted accolades for Top Song Sales Artist, Top Selling Song and Top Country Song (both for ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’).
The ‘Good News’ crooner also took the stage for a couple of enchanting performances, treating viewers to a stripped-back rendition of his Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going stand-out, ‘Highway’, as well as his smash hit, ’A Bar Song (Tipsy)’.
Prior to the ceremony, in his insightful discussion with Billboard interviewer, Tetris, Shaboozey touched on his pride at having scored a record-equalling 19-week No. 1 on the Hot 100, as well as delving into some of the artistic plans his has for the near future.
In addition, Shaboozey paid tribute to ‘Last Night’ megastar Morgan Wallen, who won four gongs at the ceremony. Tetris mentioned how Wallen had replaced Shaboozey at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with ’Love Somebody’, before Shaboozey promptly regained the top spot the following week - again with ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ - jokingly asking whether the two are in the middle of a friendly rivalry.
The ‘Last Of My Kind’ singer-songwriter underlined, “Morgan Wallen, he's a legend, you know. He's someone who makes great music and music that connects with a lot of people. So, as a country artist or someone who loves the space, I pay respect”.
Shaboozey recalled the first time he hung out with Wallen, before suggesting they nearly collaborated as part of Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going, “I met Morgan and...he was a good homie. There were even conversations about him jumping on the record early on...it's cool to just to be able to know these people, honestly”.
Shaboozey went on to toast fast-emerging alt-leaning artist, Medium Build, as another current favourite of his, “One I listen to religiously is Medium Build, he's super awesome. I really think he's one of the greatest new artists out there right now, and I can't wait for him to get his moment and see more people get put onto him”.
Shaboozey and Morgan Wallen first sparked collaboration rumours in June, when Shaboozey shared a video of him attempting to FaceTime Wallen on his socials. It's not yet clear how far along the duet that was seemingly intended for Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going was, or whether the prospect was simply discussed.
Either way, given Shaboozey and Morgan Wallen's shared penchant for blurring the lines between genres, while remaining steadfastly loyal to country music throughout, we're sure that, if the duo do decide to link-up, it would send shockwaves across the music world. Given Shaboozey and Wallen's incredible joint track record, a duet would surely be a shoo-in for a future Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper.
