During a new interview with Holler, ‘I Had Some Help’ co-writer and budding solo artist Chandler Walters has delved into the creative process behind Post Malone's F-1Trillion (Long Bed).
One of the most keenly anticipated projects of the past few years, Post Malone's debut country album was shrouded in conjecture and speculation from the moment we first started seeing those teaser photos of Post in the studio with the likes of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, ERNEST, Brad Paisley and numerous others.
The final F-1Trillion project consisted of 18 tracks, 15 of which were high-profile collaborations. Post Malone then surprised listeners by adding nine solo songs, including another Chandler Walters co-write, ‘Who Needs You’, as part of the Long Bed deluxe.
Aside from these 27 spellbinding tracks, we knew there was at least one other unreleased gem that is yet to be unveiled to the world, with Post Malone confirming on Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast he recorded a second collaboration with Morgan Wallen. More recently, Big Loud's CEO, Seth England, shared that Post and Wallen wrote seven songs together during their first session.
Tantalisingly, in his conversation with Holler, Chandler Walters has revealed there is a lot more left in the F-1Trillion vault. The Georgia prodigy explained, “There was a massive pool of songs. There were over 100 songs we had demos of. Obviously, I wasn't on all of them, but the whole album is probably more than 100 songs”.
Walters went on the reflect, “I remember when the list kept dwindling down. It got to 50, and then the band came in, and they cut like 40 songs with the full band, ready to go. There were so many of them, they just picked what kind of vibes they wanted”.
Excitingly, while some of those 100 might be stubs and half-finished demos, it seems there were around 40 that were fully recorded. Taking away the 27 on F-1Trillion (Long Bed), that means there could be roughly 13 complete Post Malone country tracks on a laptop somewhere. Will they ever see the light of day? It's possible some of them may be saved for the ’Chemical’ hitmaker's next project, while others may be repackaged into collaborations - such as his second Morgan Wallen duet.
Chandler Walters touched on one unreleased offering, named ‘Cry Me The Mississippi‘, that holds particularly fond memories for him, “We wrote so many special songs. I remember the first song I ever played steel on in a session with a full band. I'll never forget, Paul Franklin - who is my idol and the best steel player ever - was in the room tracking and Post just turns to me and goes, ‘Hey, do you want to play on this song?’ And I'm like, ‘I don't know. Like, that's Paul Franklin right there!’”
Walters warmly recalls, “They made me set up my steel in Paul Franklin's spot and play on the song we had written earlier that day. It's called ‘Cry Me The Mississippi’...I would definitely say that's a highlight. The first session I ever played on was with Aaron Sterling on drums and Derek on guitar, like all the boys, and I'm just over there shaking, trying to play something that I think makes sense”.
We think it's safe to say we're not the only ones who would love to hear ‘Cry Me The Mississippi’, a title that has the makings of a sumptuous, steel-soaked country ballad, along with the other unreleased tracks that were penned during the F-1Trillion sessions.
As well as shedding light the writing and recording process for the widely celebrated album, Chandler Walters delved into his own plans to release solo music in 2025, his close friendship with ERNEST, the experience of touring with Post Malone and more.
