In between star-studded anecdotes about his hit song, 'Tough People', and a few performances of fresh tunes, Drew Baldridge shared the never-before-heard 'Man Don't' on the Holler Stage at this year's C2C festival in Berlin.
The 'She's Somebody's Daughter' star introduced the number as one of his "new favorites", sharing a quick backstory to a song that has bite. According to the singer-songwriter, the exposing new tune was born from a conversation Baldridge had with his wife about a mutual friend who was known to stray outside of his marriage.
"He was going out to the bar a lot and he was married to his wife," he shared with the crowd as he gently plucked out the song's introduction. "One night, he was going out on her, but he was staying out until two or three a.m and waking up in his trunk, drunk. It was wrecking her; it was wrecking our other friend, his wife."
Baldridge and his own wife discussed the difficult situation their friends were experiencing, with his wife eventually saying, "A man don't do that. A man is there for his family."
He continued, "She kept going on about what a man is, and so, in my little phone, I started writing these words."
Throughout the new tune, Baldridge breaks down the difference between men and boys against a wash of impassioned acoustics.
"A man don't leave," he notes in the chorus, "A man don't run / A man don't cheat or lie or even think twice 'bout 'sorry' rolling off his tongue / Yeah, a boy can say words / Make a girl believe 'em / Way down deep and never mean 'em / Go too far and leave her heart of gold broken / Yeah, but a man don't."
A release date for 'Man Don't' is not yet known. However, elsewhere in the star's brief showcase, Baldridge gifted the audience another unreleased song, called ‘Rebel’. Perhaps new music from the artist is closer than we think.
